I'm interested in tactics and the use of siege machines in general combat. What works, what sucks and some great tips to make these a better part of my army? Also any idea on the range of these devices. I haven't been able to find any reference for the game for their ranges. Short, medium, long should be a good way to describe them. Long being, "across the whole map".

If you're attacking, siege engines let you force the defenders to take the offense, and if you're defending, they let you do additional range damage before the clash of arms, and have a nice chance of clocking out unit commanders and generals. Catapults are the best field engines until you get Demi-culverins.

My thoughts so far on seige engines in battle.

In defense on open terrain try to place your seige engines just in front of your battle line. The crews will abandon their guns automatically if the enemy get too close and then return to them once you have driven them off again.

Place those with fixed directions on the flanks angled slightly towards where you think the enemy centre will be. Those which swivel can be placed in the centre.

In defence of river crossings place fixed engines directly in line with the bridge crossing or if a bend in the river allows in such a position that they enfilade the troops approaching the bridge.

In attack seige engines are not much use place them as far forward as you dare and point them where you think the enemy centre will be. Remember to withdraw the crews if the battle moves off somewhere else especailly if you have reinforcements waiting.

When attacking a castle position your seige weapons just with 'green arrow' range of the castle keep and directly opposite the Arrow Tower that joins the Curtain Wall to the main castle wall.

Target the Main Castle Wall first, then the Curtain Wall. Once the two walls are down use up any remaining ammo on the Arrow Towers and keep.

Once your out of ammo send in the storming parties.
