    Re: recon report Halle-Wrocław-Świeradów Zdrój-Prague

    1. Halle. Still quiet and provincial. Fewer drunks and baldies in the streets at night. Nice hotel opposite huge brothel. Great bookshops, scored Spengler's Untergang for 9 euros and two books by Austrian Ueber-detective Thomas Müller - fascinating stuff.

    2. Wrocław. An elegant town, being diligently restored to its former glory. The Museum of Architecture housed in the former monastery of St Bernardine is interesting: modern Polish architecture seems to be very formalist and functionalist. Another thing that is huge here: Kalashnikov-shooting.

    3. Świeradów Zdrój. A rural town in the hills bordering Czechia. Polish standard of living has visibly improved since agent’s last visit in 2000. Operating from a beautiful country house up in the hills agent did a language test. He spoke German to the locals for three days, to which they reacted either politely or aversely. He then spoke English with an American accent to them, to which they reacted enthusiastically. Local restaurants suck, but a peasant women cooked us up some delicious sauerkraut dishes. Polish tomatoes are something else: huge, meaty suckers, extremely tasty.

    4. Prague. Agent has seen the Golem! Its name is ‘Tourist’ and it roams the inner city day and night, unable to speak, yet wreaking havoc on jews and gentiles alike. Prague used to be a sleepy provincial town; everyone who was born there and had talent went to Vienna, Berlin, Paris or New York. Agent suspects this is still the case; there is not a shred of the old Prague genius to be found, every hot spot is commercialized to death. The local passion is beer, thank heavens it is such great stuff. After agent walked out of the subway on Wenceslas square and saw that it led directly into a huge McDonald’s, he plugged his ears and raised his eyesight above street level for the rest of his stay. The river is still kind to everyone though, and so, amazingly, are the locals.

Very good. I spent four days in Prague, loved it and never even saw a MacDonalds. Agree with our man about the beer and locals.

Agent also undermined my evil plan to turn the Monastery into a second Backroom.

And now Agent tries to make me jealous by telling me about a nice journey through some nice parts of Europe but Agent has to know that I was in Prague and I did not find it that commercialized.
It was a very interesting city with a lot of things to see (the citadel, the bridges, the Hundertwasserhaus, hookers, etc.). A bit expensive here and there but overall very nice and more nice old buildings than here.

Of course I can only give examples, I don't have the whole picture. One example is the Black Theatre, which is less than a shadow of what it used to be. Nowadays it is more like the Folies Bergères, the Parisian music hall that caters exclusively to bus tourism. And did you see the circus they have made of the Hradčany?

Another example would be U Flecku, which is a conveyor belt for tourists: how-nice-two-black-beers-with-a-goulash-can-I-pay-thank-you-very-much-next-tourist-please.

On the other hand I had a great time visiting Czocha Castle in Poland. Rightly famous for its exterior and interior. The interior was restored by a German entrepreneur around 1900, but it is still very much worth a look. Greatly recommended!

    FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY

    from ORG HQ
    to "Adrian002"

Move east, via Budapest, Bucharest, thence Tblisi, and report. Try the german-english gambit at those locales and gauge reaction. No NOT mention Ossetia, but do drop 'NATO' into some everyday convo. If confronted, say: "oh, I meant potato."

Continue journo cover as "Men's Health" correspondent.

    Rtn A-dam soonest after.

Move via Budapest, Bucharest, thence Tblisi envisaged, but need more funds. Prague severe strain on beer budget. Men's Health journo makes locals restless, cover changed to stereotype of second-rate Western investor with VW Tuareg 4x4 and fake Armani suit. Works wonders.

Reinvent the British and you get a global finance center, edible food and better service. Reinvent the French and you may just get more Germans.
