    Default Eastern Strife; Lithuanian AAR

Well, this is my first AAR ever. It is done with the MTW XL mod, began on Normal difficulty (I'm not that great of a player, as you'll no doubt see during the course of this), in the Early Era XL, with the Lithuanian faction.

    The Rules
    1. Will not ally with a Catholic state, except if I myself proposed that alliance OR if it's a wedding proposal.
    2. Will not use bribes against rebels, and only in dire circumstances against the other factions.
    3. Cannot have more than three spies, two assassins and four emissaries at once.
    4. Limited use of crossbows or arbalests, including mounted crossbowmen.
    5. Will not war against Poland, only defend.
    6. Cannot, absolutely CANNOT lose Lithuania to another faction. If it is lost, I must reclaim it within no more than three turns, or it’s ‘game over’.

I didn't really have a clear goal in mind, except for building an empire somewhat familiar to the real Lithuanian territories at their max extent - from Baltic Sea to Black Sea. But, really, that'll probably be achieved quickly, so I'll just play it and see what happens.

I confess, this first chapter might be quite boring, but nothing really happened during those first turns. I hoped to get a good battle, but you'll see what came out of it.

    Chapter 1: Meet the Lithuanians

The Grand Duke of the Lithuanians, Algirdas the First.

Lord Vytautaitis, a cousin of Algirdas and the appointed regent of Lithuania who is to rule in the Grand Duke’s absence.

The birth of a son of the Grand Duke, the third son and the fourth child, is celebrated throughout the land. The child is given the name of Vytautas, and it is expected he shall carry on the legacy of the Lithuanian Grand Dukes should the worst happen.

Troubling news come from the west. The Holy Roman Empire, perhaps the nearest of the western Catholics to Lithuania, is considered to field the mightiest and the most numerous armies. The Council of Nobles and the Grand Duke are worried - should this force turn against the east, the relatively small power of Lithuania would not stand much of a chance.

Worried by the news, the Grand Duke quickly assembles a force and marches out into the neighboring province of Chernigov. Fortunately, Algirdas’ rashness does not put him into trouble, as the local forces decide to withdraw to Ryazan. Chernigov, relatively peacefully, falls into Lithuanian hands before the Kievans could lay their hands on it.

Lord Ceidvilas is appointed to the station of Duke of Chernigov. While not the most trustworthy person, Ceidvilas had the makings of a fine governor; Algirdas had hope that, with time, loyalty would come to the man. If not, disposing of him would not be a problem. For the meantime, Lithuania needed every coin they could squeeze out of their provinces.

More good news for the Lithuanians – one of the Grand Duke’s sons comes of age. However, Algirdas is worried about his rather rebellious son, and has decided to keep an eye on all of his activities for the time being.

A tempting alliance offer has been refused. The Grand Duke reasoned that the Catholics are far too unpredictable and intolerant when it came to people of other religions, and that this ‘alliance’ was more of an offer of vassalage, something the Lithuanians fiercely resisted. However, the Council was worried that this refusal of an alliance from such a comparatively tiny nation might insult the Emperor, and spark a war between the two factions, something Lithuanians needed least at the time.

More news from the West. Apparently, the Holy Roman Empire is the leading power in Europe, and not only militarily. This made even the proud Grand Duke begin questioning his decision. However, in the end his opinion remains the same – Lithuanians must remain free from western nations, and, if possible, retain their old, pagan ways.

Finally, a reason for the Lithuanians to rejoice. Civilization is beginning to flourish in their lands – soon, the Lithuanian Grand Dukes will find themselves equal with the Kings of the West!

The title of Chamberlain is appointed to Lord Vytautaitis, strengthening his bond with the Grand Duke and the nation. The Duke is quick to learn, and is soon one of the most well-learned people in Lithuania and possibly the entire north-eastern Europe as well.

Again, news from the western frontier, for once not about the Holy Roman Empire. The achievements of these ‘English’ are impressive, and perhaps there are a few pointers to take from them in taxation. The Grand Duke makes note to try and make contact with them as soon as possible.

More good news – an alliance with one of the most powerful nations of Europe and perhaps the world is signed after much consideration. The Grand Duke decides, from what he knows of the east, that the Byzantine Emperor will not try to take Lithuania’s freedom, and such a mighty ally can be useful, especially since Byzantine Empire is the main orthodox authority, and Lithuania is beset by Russian Orthodoxes on all sides – perhaps the Byzantines will be able to contain the Novgorodians and Kievans. And, if worst came to the worst, Lithuanians could become Orthodoxes themselves, accepting the religion from Byzantines.

The Lithuanian religion is being spread in Chernigov successfully, replacing Orthodox Christianity. Hopefully, this will not upset the Orthodoxes in the region.

The daughter of Algirdas comes of age. It is decided that she will be married off to the Polish prince, in an attempt to establish friendly relationships with the neighbors.

Several years pass by peacefully, with no major events in Lithuania. The Grand Duke continues mustering a sizeable force; the Lithuanians had not yet seen combat, yet it was possible that was going to change, and quite soon. Algirdas had his eyes on Smolensk, a Novgorodian province.

On another note, the Lithuanian border watch noticed several failed attempts of the Volga-Bulgarians to take Ryazan, until the province was finally claimed by the Novgorodians. Lithuanian forces did not arrive in time to claim it for themselves; however, expansion so far east was not yet planned, thus perhaps it was for the best.

Finally, the time was right – the Lithuanian army invaded Smolensk, and attempted to draw the Novgorodians, who were still besieging a particularly well-provisioned rebel fort, into an open battle. However, the battle of Smolensk was not to be…

This move unnerved the Grand Duke – most likely, the Novgorodians were plotting something, and this was only a part of their strategy. Indeed…

(Author’s note: In the excitement, I forgot to take a shot of the Kievans withdrawing from Lithuania)
The Lithuanians had fallen into a trap! With no allies left, and both Kievans and Novgorodians against them, Lithuanians’ only hope was Poland – the united nations could hope strike down the Orthodox threat.

At least the rebels in Smolensk fell quickly, since their food supplies were exhausted by the Novgorodians.

So far, the only attack against the Lithuanians was but an ill-planned invasion from Kiev, but the Grand Duke quickly sent a letter to Lord Chamberlain Vytautaitis to strengthen Vilnius’ defense. If the Polish were to become hostile, there would be little hope for Lithuania to survive...

    Thanks for the feedback!

    Chapter 2: The Kievan Rus

Two years have passed since the Lithuanians fell into the Orthodox trap. Grand Duke Algirdas ordered a retreat to Lithuania; Chernigov and Smolensk were abandoned, but not after the Lithuanians took all that they could and burned the rest. The money gathered was used to hire mercenaries to help defend Lithuania and equip more locals.

Seeing as the Novgorodians had built up somewhat in Smolensk, Algirdas quickly attacks and forces them to retreat. Afterwards, he again razes everything to the ground and retreats.

While the Grand Duke attempts to exhaust the Novgorodians’ resources, behind the scenes his emissaries are working to lure at least some Kievans to Lithuanian side. Sure enough…

Apparently, the Kievan Grand Prince misplaced his trust when assigning a commander to the garrison of Kiev! The castle turns sides relatively easy, however the decent-sized force of the Kievans does not, and before the main Lithuanian forces can arrive…

    Kiev is assaulted!

    The Battle of Kiev Gate

The Kievan host is four times the size of the garrison, and the commander has little hope to win.

Iosif chooses to deploy his troops in the inner castle, hoping that the gates shall stop his former masters.

The heir to the title of Kievan Grand Prince, who is in command of this battle, sends of some of his men to breach the gates…

    And they succeed!

The Mounted Crossbowmen attempt to stop the Rus Spearmen from entering the castle…

… Yet, they fail, and have to withdraw after taking losses. The Rus Spearmen try to breach the second gate…

This time, however, they turn tail and run. Only to be replaced by another, larger force of Armored Spearmen…

The Spearmen succeed in breaking through the gates! Now, it all depends on the courage of the men!

The Druzhina Infantry charge and bottleneck the Kievans.

However, will this tactical position help pull victory from the grasp of the Kievan Horde?

For every unit routed, another two appear, yet the Druzhina continue their bloody work, for hours and hours on, even as the skies are clouded and the Lithuanian god of skies and lightning, Perkunas, unleashes his fury on the mortals.

The Druzhina Cavalry join the fray, in an attempt to rout the invaders and trigger a chain reaction which Iosif hopes for.

Finally, even the Mounted Crossbowmen join the melee. Now, all the forces are committed to the battle.

The battle lasts for hours and hours on, rain is replaced by fog, and the sun starts sinking towards the west…

Finally, tired of waiting, the Kievan heir joins the fray with his bodyguards, slowly shifting the balance to Kievan favor.

Indeed, Iosif’s forces are soon destroyed, and he himself falls. Only two horsemen are left, yet they continue to fight with valor unheard of, knowing that there will be no mercy.

The rest of the Kievan force retreats, leaving three units of spearmen to deal with the two warriors. The Kievan heir is shocked as he wades through the corpses of his men – their casualties made the victory not worth it.

Finally, after slaying as many as they could, the two brothers of arms die without shame.

Kiev has fallen, but the heroes who fought that day shall be remembered forever, both by their enemies and the Lithuanians themselves.

A proposal of marriage comes from the Cuman Khan, a fellow pagan ruler involved in a conflict against the Kievan Rus. Algirdas, unaware that the Cumans are foes of the Poles, agrees.

Then, eager for revenge after hearing the tale of the Heroes of Kiev, he personally leads an invasion force against the shaken, demoralized bits of the previous army left after the assault of Kiev.

Surely enough, the Kievans withdraw to their fortress, hoping that the Lithuanians did not bring siege weapons.

News from the east. One of Algirdas’ foreigner advisors, a Turk, former emissary of the Sultan who was invited by the Grand Duke to stay after bringing offer of an alliance (Author’s Note: for some reason, I forgot to take a pic of that alliance offer; it was accepted), suggests that this is the work of the Seljuk Sultanate, as the Armenians and Turks were involved in a conflict when he left. Algirdas, after some thought, sends a congratulation message to the Sultan.

The Polish emissaries finally arrive at Lithuania, and inquire Algirdas if he wishes to cancel the alliance between the two nations by siding with the Cumans. Algirdas swears on all the gods that he did not know of this, and remains allied to the Poles.

Welcome news from Kiev reaches Vilnius.

More news. The Turkish advisor suggests that this might be the work of a far-away Muslim nation, the Almoravids.

A marriage proposal is accepted from the Kingdom of Norway. The tales of the Vikings that threatened the Curonian tribe years before are not yet gone from Lithuania, and even though the descendants of the Vikings have been baptized, they are fierce warriors still; and, hopefully, when the Orthodox situation is stabilized, Norway will be able to help the Lithuanians when they’ll eventually attempt to take Prussia, which currently rests in Swedish hands.

News from the neighboring Cumans. Algirdas is wary of this new Khan, as he might be a threat to Lithuanians, especially after the Kievans are eliminated.

Kiev has surrendered, yet none were spared. A memorial stone was erected where the Battle of Kiev Gate took place.

The fourth son of Algirdas comes of age, who was born when Algirdas was away on campaign in Chernigov. Prince Jogaila quickly assumes his duties and takes command of a part of the Kiev force.

The Grand Prince of Novgorod did not agree to a ceasefire; Algirdas suspects he might be planning to attack Lithuania, even though the Novgorodians have remained inactive in the war.

With Kiev in their hands and Poland alongside them, the Lithuanians find their position stronger than before – the Kievan Rus is greatly weakened with the loss of their capital, more so their Grand Prince is away from his main forces in Chernigov. This can be the beginning of the golden age for Lithuania, and glorious plans are already made by the Council of Nobles – the conquest of Novgorod, the joining of Lithuania and Poland, and a great trading fleet in the Baltic and Black seas…

Default Re: Eastern Strife; Lithuanian AAR

I was originally going to post this yesterday, but my dial-up modem didn't want to start. So I guess I'll have to post two chapters today.

Chapter 3: A fall from grace

Lord Vatijaitis is assigned to be the Duke of Kiev. He is a very loyal man, as well as rather knowledgeable in economical matters.

One of the Princes invades Smolensk, in which only a small force is present.

Obviously, the Kievans retreat; the risk of losing their Grand Prince is too great.

    News from the North.

News from the west. As usual, the Lithuanians do not pay much attention to Catholic superstitions – in the dense forests of north-eastern Europe, battles are more often ambushes than gallant charges of heavy cavalry.

The Poles continue waging their war against the Cuman Khanate; Grand Duke Algirdas is rather irritated that his ally allows faith to take the place which common sense should occupy – the Cumans are potential allies, and mighty ones at that, as their heavy cavalry is matched perhaps only by the Volga-Bulgars’.

The Polish are overwhelmed from all sides, and are forced to break off the siege and return to their homeland in shame.

Another son of Algirdas comes of age, the second of the three that were born during the time when Algirdas was away in Smolensk.

More news from the catholic world.

A misfortune – the Grand Prince was about to agree on a ceasefire between Lithuania and the people of Novgorod, or at least that was the presumption the emissaries up north made. Now, everything shall have to be begun anew.

A strategy of Algirdas to weaken the Kievans is set into motion.

The sixth and final son of Algirdas comes of age.

The Kievan force attacks Vladimir castle. The garrison commander, who had heard of the Battle of Kiev Gate, intended to try the same strategy. However, the fort’s wooden walls fail to hold, and his force is attacked from all sides.

An unfortunate loss. At very least, the Kievans were weakened.

    A famine in Lithuania.

Grand Duke Algirdas strikes at the Kievans’ last province, hoping to put an end to the Kievan Rus.

The combatants are equal in numbers, yet the Kievan Grand Prince has more archers. Algirdas decides that, if possible, the battle must be fought during rainfall, to minimize the casualties that could be inflicted by the archers.

(Author’s apologies: Regretfully, overjoyed about finally destroying my most active enemy, I forgot to save the replay of this battle…)
The Lithuanians managed to win a victory without calling in their reinforcements. Unfortunately, the Khwarazmian Cavalry that was sent to Grand Duke Algirdas by the Seljuk Sultan was destroyed in the battle.

The Grand Duke of Lithuania, wounded during the battle, did not make it. This is a black day for Lithuania, as a fine ruler was lost, and with him the influence he managed to fight for Lithuania.

    News from the east.

The several Turkish engineers that have recently arrived to Lithuania evaluate the castle and, from its size judges that the food should not last long.

The new Lithuanian Grand Duke is crowned, however he is a particularly weak ruler. Whispers about a plot against him fly through the Council of Nobles.

Until this plot can be realized, the Council accomplishes one of the wishes of Grand Duke Algirdas the First – they send an emissary to England, hoping to make an alliance with a powerful Catholic state.

More news from the east. Could the Seljuk Sultanate be in trouble?

The assumptions of the Turks were correct – Vladimir castle falls, and with it, the Kievan Rus.

With Lithuania’s fiercest enemy gone, the future looks bright. The Poles are suspiciously silent, and the Council suspects that some ill fate might have befallen them; however, the border watch reports that the Polish garrison in Volhynia is at full strength, so it is not dwelt on for long. The new Novgorodian Grand Prince seems willing to end the stagnated war with Lithuania – even though he does not agree to sign the official papers, the negotiators report that he has made promises not to move against Lithuania. More and more educated Turks arrive in Lithuania, suggesting that not all is well with the Seljuk Sultanate; however, this only means that civilization in Lithuania shall continue to prosper! Even more, the current Grand Duke, Algirdas the Second, is not as proud and ‘old-fashioned’ as his father, and is already looking towards the possibility of accepting Islam as Lithuania’s major religion…

More of a summary than a chapter. I didn't want to post the entire mess that was my war against Novgorod, but it was more of a push out than war anyway, as apparently they had very small armies. In the end it was a battle that I autocalculated instead of fighting as it was obvious who was to win.

Chapter 4: Summary of Lithuanian deeds during years 1080-1151

At the year 1151 AD, after the crowning of a new Grand Prince, all Lithuanian forces were to arrive at the capital for inspection.

The entire Armed Forces of Lithuania, except for the keep garrisons.

Current Lithuanian Grand Duke, Gediminas the First, son of Kestutis the Old who took over after Algirdas the Second was assassinated at the request of the Council of Nobles.

Prince Mindaugas, brother of Kestutis and second of the four sons of Kestutis the Old.

Lord Chamberlain Algelis, grandson of Lord Vytautaitis.

Map of Europe, provided by one of the Turk cartographers who arrived, along with many others, following the fall of Seljuk Sultanate.

The results of Turkish influences are there for all to see – Lithuania is the most civilized and developed nation of the world.

The Lithuanian treasury and political state. The alliance with the Poles was broken after the new Polish King proclaimed war against the Danes; Kestutis the Old could not support him, as Gediminas had recently married a Danish princess.

Overall, the Lithuanians did much during those seventy years of warfare and politics. While relatively new players in the world of Europe, they did not falter; now, with an army that cannot wait to sweep over the battlefields of Europe, and a grand Turk-inspired civilization, they are one of the most powerful nations of the world!

A text-only chapter, with which I want to ask a question - should I break one of my rules and attack the Poles, who are, apparently, going to be destroyed soon, or stick to the rule and thus enter a war with a stronger opponent, the Byzantine Empire, for the same provinces?

    Chapter 5: The Council

“Fellow noblemen of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania! I welcome you to the twenty second gathering of the Council of Nobles! Fellow dukes, present your right to be heard in the form of your tokens of rulership over certain provinces of the Grand Duchy.” Lord Chamberlain Algelis announced loudly, quelling all the conversations in the grandeur room. At those words, a boy of no more than fifteen summers walked around the oval table, stopping occasionally nearby the seated noblemen to collect the tokens. Many different items were put on the golden tray he carried – a broken sword, incrusted with silver along the edges from the Duke of Kiev, a silk handkerchief with a crescent from the Duke of Livonia (the Duke was a Turk nobleman until the Seljuk Sultanate fell)… The last item to be put into the tray was a gold-incrusted horn, a family heirloom of the Dukes of Lithuania. Afterwards, the tray was set down on the table, right in front of the throne on which the Grand Duke himself sat. Afterwards, the boy bowed and left the room.

“This gathering, the Grand Duke himself has blessed us with his presence, for only the second time in the entire history of our nation.” Lord Chamberlain continued. All the Dukes stood up and bowed in the direction of the throne; Grand Duke Gediminas responded with a slightly lazy nod. All the Dukes sat down; Gediminas began whispering with one of his Turk advisors who stood alongside the throne.

“As you all know,” Duke Algelis continued, his gaze wandering through the faces of the Dukes in the room. “This gathering has been called to discuss the particularly troubling state in which the Grand Duchy finds itself. The Byzantine Emperor, our recent ally, has asked for our help against the enemies of his Crimean lands and thus his whole Empire, the Kingdom of Poland. This puts us in an awkward position – by the decree of treaty of Vilnius, we are not to wage war against the Poles unless provoked, and there has been no provocation on the Poles’ part towards us.”

“And there will be none as long as the Lithuanians do not provoke the Poles themselves.” The Duke of Smolensk, Lord Wartislaw, proudly announced; his father was of Polish birth, and it was no secret that the Duke himself maintained active relationship with the Polish court.

“What are you suggesting?” The resounding voice of Duke of Muscovy, Lord Kantibutas, sounded in the room. Duke Kantibutas’ grandfather was the first noble in the family, having saved the Grand Duke’s life in the battle of Chernigov; their family was always noted for their fierce loyalty to the Grand Dukes and Lithuania.

Lord Wartislaw straightened in his chair; several members of his retinue reached out for their swords. Duke Kantibutas began standing up; however, he fell back into his chair when the Grand Duke slowly raised his hand.

“Dukes, Dukes! Let us not fight when war may be at our gates.” Algelis frowned. “Resolve your differences in an honorable duel, not in the court, more so in the presence of the Grand Duke.”

“If I may be allowed to have my say.” Mehmed al-Rashid, the Duke of Livonia spoke. Duke Algelis nodded and sat down; Mehmed rose from his chair, candle light flickering on his scale cuirass.

“The situation we find ourselves is… difficult.” He began, searching for the best words to pick, something that he found rather difficult, as Lithuanian language was an unusual one for all the Turks, him included. “However, I remind you from what lands I came. We have fought against the Greeks. We have earned great victories, but so have they. And no matter how numerous, our victories were not enough. Their leader is powerful and smart; he delayed the fall of his people with wise politics and tactics, even when he was not yet emperor. He will not hesitate to destroy any that stand in his way. If Allah wills it, after the Seljuks will come the Fatimids. After the Fatimids the Poles. And after Poles shall be you, if you are so unwise as to stand in his way for no other reason than a sentimental friendship.”

“Mehmed speaks wisely.” Duke Kantibutas rose from his chair, breaking the silence that reigned in the room after al-Rashid sat down. “The Byzantines’ army is great, and we know it. And so are the Danes’ Viking hordes. Both of them are bearing down on Poland, and winning. We shall earn nothing from standing with the Poles, and possibly lose everything!”

“The armies of the Polish king are mighty as ever-“ Lord Wartislaw began, standing up, but was cut off by Kantibutas, who was almost yelling at this point.

“You know that this is not true! Poland’s armies are beaten and weak, and the only reason they hold in the south is because the Byzantines are yet to transport their entire army over the Black Sea! And let me ask you one question, Wartislaw – when was the last time Poland offered military support to Lithuania?”

Lord Wartislaw fell silent, slowly sitting down. Kantibutas smirked, continuing his speech:

“Have any of you noticed that this question is hard to answer in any other way than ‘never’? The Poles are worthless allies – the Seljuks Turks, a faraway nation, have helped us more than our own neighbors! Thus, I propose that our armies march into Volhynia, Pereyaslav and Levidia, and take what should be ours!”

Silence fell over the council of nobles, the only noise being a creak as Lord Kantibutas sat down on his chair.

I'm afraid this AAR won't continue. After I moved my Total War folder, for some reason it deleted all my savegames, including the one with the AAR. I've tried moving it back, but, alas, it didn't work. So I guess I'll have to quit on this AAR...

Are you sure they're not in the "recycle bin" or something? It'd be a shame for this to end so early.

I've checked in there as well, and sadly the savegames aren't there. Bloody Vista has a habit of deleting my savegames. Truly, it's a shame I had to end this; however, I hope to get another MTW AAR going, using the BKB Super Mod.

If it's vista are you sure you checked both save games files? IE the one in the folder as normal and the one under compatability files?

Even if you can't find them I'll look forward to your next one
