    Default IL2 Sturmovik

Alright, so being a flight simmer, I'm naturally interested in IL2 Sturmovik. I just had a question for the local simmers who have already bought the game - which packs should I buy? The original IL2, of course, but out of the Forgotten Battles, Forgotten Battles Ace Expansion Pack, Pacific Fighters, Pe-2 add-on, Manchuria and 1946, which ones are best to get?

    Thanks in advance.

IL-2 1946 is a compilation of all of the IL-2 expansions and the original game. That's the only thing you need to buy.

Landing on carriers isn't bad at all. You just gotta remember NOT to stall over the carrier, keep your airspeed up in case you miss the wires. If you stall, you're going in the drink, period. Also, unless you're EXTREMELY rusty at landing, I'd just skip the carrier landing tutorial that starts on dry land and go right for the actual tutorial mission.

So, how hard is the game? I have a Logitech Attack 3 joystick, fair price and good. Is this a game I can jump into and fly?

Yes and no. Yes, it's got settings so you can put it in "easy", which is essentially arcade-like controls and rules. If you haven't done a REAL flight sim before, I'd make a point to go through the tutorials and PAY ATTENTION to them. To be fair, I always turn on all but a few of the realism options. I keep the view limitations off, and I let the game manage the radiators/superchargers/mixtures/prop pitches. If you want an arcade game, this really isn't it. This game overall is old and it'll show it's age to you early on, BUT it's hands down the best WWII military flight sim out there right now.

Yes, if you've got real flight sim experience, then it should be relatively easy for you. Just start easy and work your way back up until you're comfortable again, turning up the realism as you go. Just like riding a bike. At 20000 ft. At 300 knots. With machine guns.

No, if you have no flight sim experience, then it won't be really that easy. If you're expecting something that you can go from 0 to ace in an hour or less, keep walking, this ain't the game for you. If you have no real experience with sims and understand that this will take some time and patience, then you should have a ball with it. Flying a mission and coming back with 4 aerial kills and the damn thing shot to pieces and barely holding together as you nail the landing can give you a real sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.

Trying out the demo, and really, really enjoy it. Messing around with the joystick options and finally got it comftorable. Managed to down 2 dive bombers before stalling and losing control

    Definately will get.

Where are the realism settings? It's hard enough for me to take off without crashing.

I found it pretty easy to get into, but then, I already fly in FSX, WoE, and CFS3. It's more challenging than CFS3, but not bad at all. Great game.

You can adjust them before you start a campaign.

This is one of my top 3 games of all time. 1946 is the way to go.

Doe anyone have the hakenkreuz mod? I can't find it.

KI-84 is the plane of choice.

I have to go with the Me-109 series as a start - it's a good sturdy little plane. Later on, the Focke-Wulf Ta 152 is my beauty of choice among the "realistic" aircraft. The Focke-Wulf Ta 183 packs a wicked punch, even if it isn't the prettiest of birds. That honour would have to go to the Horten Ho-IX.

The scenario, guessing from the title, is the Eastern Front, right? Because I´m still looking for a worthy sucessor to Aces over Europe (Western Front, April 1944 - May 1945).

Eastern Front, Manchuria, and the Pacific. Combat Flight Simulator 3 is over the Western Front, but it's not as good as Sturmovik.
