    Default Hearts of Iron 3

I was hoping it would be Victoria 2.
I haven't played the other HOI games.

Wow. I didn't see that coming and I have to say it - I'm very disappointed that HoI gets another game.

Heh. Um, I really don't see how this'll be that different from HOI2?

Why? Admittedly, Vicky II would've been nice, but HoI 2 is an excellent series - even if the latest installment didn't come out that long ago.

Excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed HoI2, and there's still a billion ways it could be improved on.

And hopefully they include widescreen support this time round, so i don't have to run it 16-bit colours windowed mode.

Sounds too complicated for my first paradox game, can anyone recommend an easy to use but still fun one? It seems like a series I'd enjoy but I always find myself completely lost and quickly destroyed in any demos I try...

EUIII is realitivly stright forward, HoI2 isn't that bad ethier once you get the hang of it. The tortourials are pretty good to so you shouldn't have a ton of trouble if you try HoI2 first.

People have been waiting for Vicky II for much longer, as have the CK crowd. HoI2 with the expansions plays fine and I see no need for the upgrade.

Anything but Vicky or CK. I would also recommend EUIII because Paradox dumbed-down parts of it.

I personally think naval combat need to be improved. It feels to simple for me. I mean, just take your ships to find the other ships, which ever ship has the greatest range fires, which means carrier almost always take first blood, and usually it's a battleship . The only thing that adds flavor is if it's raining, which it rarely does, and that prevents their Enterprise from sinking my Shokaku.

Same for air combat. Hell, I don't even know how it works. I find myself just setting the patrol times and letting the enemies orange bar fall.

Land combat was, naturally, the only thing Paradox really focused on in terms of war. Generals ability to launch events, those events help win the battle, then you have things like command capacity, weather, rivers, hills, engineers, etc. And they're all effecting the battle.

I find there is nothing Vicky needs to improve on. It's highly detailed without getting confusing, highly simplistic without getting boring, and all around great. HoI, however, fell short in some areas.

The only thing I can think of that Vicky could use is the battle scenarios that HoI has.

(By the way, does anyone recommend Armageddon?"

HOI:2, I find it's more straight forward than the earlier EU titles and Vicky. Also, DV I don't find too hard, since you can pick a small County and just gently play through to get the hang of it.

I've got it, I really don't know what's that different about it to be honest. The two campaigns it adds can be quite fun.

Rome was very nice for me. Wasn't Game of the Year worthy, but basically what it is is the EU 3 version of Rome, but it includes Barbarians (You can compare them to revived factions in MTW, or the Barbarians in RTW, to a degree), civil wars caused by disloyal generals with loyal legions, and, to a degree, characters.

From what I heard it was just horrible, but I've never played it.

Yes, I recommend it, although it doesnt change much. The biggest change is to the air/naval combat. Now your anti-naval planes wont eradicate an entire fleet, it is much more balanced. Also, it has made playing a minor nation more fun, since you can now take over conquored nations tech teams and take their full IC. It has also made possible to attach brigades to naval units and build land units with brigades already attached.

The two campaigns are mainly for multi play imo, end date is 1964.

Okay I now have EU3 and like it so far, it's much easier to understand than I thought it would be. I have one problem though, which is causing me to lose a lot of battles: whenever I train a new unit it is in an army of its own rather than the armies you start off with that have multiple regiments in them. I cannot figure out how to merge units into one large armies rather than numerous tiny ones. Whenever I try sending them all at once to an enemy province then only one army seems to take part in the battle, meaning any enemy army of 2 units or more can hold off my men for years. Could someone please tell me how to merge units? Sorry to hijack the thread btw...

When they're in the same province just drag a box to select all the units. Then, at the top of the unit list, there should be a merge button. Click it.
