I dont know. I think I would feel safer with a teacher armed with a gun rather than a student. As long as the teacher knows when and how to use it. Even if crime rate and school shootings weren't so high, I know back in my dads day the teachers used to leave rifles in their car.

Having known several teachers get stressed to the point of a mental breakdown, I'm not sure I'd be happy with them having a gun should it all get too much for them...

They used to have rifle clubs at schools where even the kids would bring guns to school- yet the mass shootings that everyone feared never materialized.

I visited a public school just a few years ago that had a shooting range in its basement- now used for storage of course. It was pretty interesting.

Call me biased, but I have known a few squirrelly teachers in my time. The thought of those individuals being licensed to carry arms in a classroom is unsettling, to say the least.

From the article, here's what is required for the teacher to carry a gun:

1) they must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun

2) must be authorized to carry by the district

3) must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations

4) must use ammunition designed to minimize the risk of ricocheting bullets.

I'm glad to see not any teacher can carry a gun on a whim. But it still doesn't give me warm and fuzzies. I wonder who will be checking #4 and how often?

Right, cuz a teacher who wanted to go on a killing spree would let rules not allowing him to bring a gun to school stop him. That's why we've never had a school shooting- because students aren't allowed to bring guns to school... oh wait.

They very best that can be said for this comment is "morbid." Of course you wouldn't be hoping for the death of innocent students, even if they are guilty of the grave sin of being American?

As much as I'm rah-rah behind the 2A, I'm hesitant to support this. Hopefully nothing becomes of it and when it doesn't end in the deaths of dozens you can all try to find other ways to discredit firearm ownership.

You see, in other countries, we feel safer when neither a teacher nor a student carry guns. I feel (Heck, felt, since I'm already in college. :P) safer when it's the State School Police who carries all the guns. But that's just me. This law the thread is about is just another example why I consider the USA a barbarian country. (Adding to the list in which "Non-Existence of State Health Service" currently tops)

But those are violations of a citizens rights , how dare they put up legal barriers that restrict a persons right to bear arms , and as for saying what ammunition people can and cannot have ....well thats just like them damn liberal euroweenies down mexico way .

Wow , and I worked at a state school where they had not only a shooting range but an armoury too .
It wasn't so that kids could bring guns to school in case they needed protection from a nutcase with a gun though .

I've got to agree with Tribesman here.

As Xiahou alluded to, this country has always had guns a strong gun culture. There used to be gun clubs and shooting classes in most public schools. Sure there was gun crime, most notably in the early Western expansion and the gangster violence of the twenties, but most of that was directed at the participants or law enforcement when it tried to intervene - and more importantly, it was based on profit.

The idea of going postal - the mentality that "I'm going to go kill as many people as possible before the cops kill me." - is a sign of some real social problems.

I support this measure, but only as a band-aid. We need to work towards not having to have such things. The screamer's try and blame it all on video games and TV, but I think it goes deeper than that.

Agreed I think the main problem is that we now live in a culture that vaules superficial traits that many times are ethier descturctive or given only through birth. Add in an increasing demand in the culture to have to be hugely succesful and conform and you get a perfect storm.
