I never gave it a thought. I know for a fact that in the 17th and 18th centuries the Navy was generally regarded as a wastebin for less talented (to put it mildly) sons of well-to-do families. Epitomized by Admiral Sir George Rodney telling his officers: "Gentlemen, the painful task of thinking belongs to me."
