    Default Soundproofing my window

Alright, so I love my new apartment. It's in a really great location near campus and all the good stuff downtown. The only problem is... I barely get any sleep.

If it's not drunken frat boys yelling (yes drunken on a Tuesday night, I know) at 2 am, it's the construction crews sawing the road 50 feet from my window.

I've tried earplugs and while they help to mute the sound, it still wakes me up.

Any advice on how to cut the sound through my windows down cheaply? This is driving me nuts.

That's a drag, Kush. I must say I can't believe you all tolerate this sort of barbaric behaviour at your campus.

Maybe you can all simply booby-trap the road? That'll teach those construction crews to take their noise elsewhere.

If you do do something permanent, make sure you clear it with the landlord first. I know down here that's a legal requirement, not sure what things are like up there.

It wouldn't be permanent because I doubt I'd be able to. If it were up to me I'd fill the entire thing with concrete blocks.

Very thick curtains in front of your windows. Helps somewhat.

Other than that...do nothing, a few weeks and you'll get used to the sounds so they'll won't bother you anymore.

Foam mattresses might work if you cut them into shape and tape them up.

Thanks for the suggestions. I may try the curtains, foam, and egg crates.

OK so, serious answer, Kong mentioned this in the chat. If you're used to sleeping in peace and quiet, you just need to accept the fact that it's not going to happen anymore. Solution: white noise.

My entire family has slept with fans on since as far back as I can remember, now I can barely sleep unless there's one on around me to drown out noise. So pick something, fan, computer noise, AC unit, one of those white-noise generators, pick something and use that. It may not eliminate all outside noise, but it'll go a long way to drown it out.

I hate to agree with Whacker, but I have a fan that sits right by my head when I'm in bed...

Definitely. During spring/summer/fall, a fan does wonders. In the winter, use a humidifier (and not one of the low volume ones).

Exactly. I found the best combo for this is one of the high output humidifiers like you can get at Walgreens for $20, and put a good fan pointed upwards near the output so that it'll circulate the humidity. If you don't, then most of the mist will just condense outside the unit and soak your carpet. This really saves my nose and throat during winter.

Damn, my egg carton suggestion is no longer required! (i'd suggest attaching a bunch to a piece of carboard or something, and just place it in the window frame)

A fan... that sounds like a solid idea.

Thanks whacker. I'll be visiting Walmart tomorrow

There, but for the grace of God, goes John Bradford

Put a think blanket onto your window, and then take an aggshell foam mattress thingie and cut it to the dimension of your window, and put it in place. Then, you put a thick curtain on your side, and match up all tyhe results by placing a dresser in front of the window. Should keep out the noise, if you dont have a dresser, the rest should work.

EDIT:And, of course, you could match this up with the fan as usggested...
