Thread: Best Infantry Unit In Game?
Grriffon 18:04 08-27-2008
So for grins and giggles, what does everyone think is the best infantry unit in the game, This can be any infantry, recruitable or mercenary.

For myself, I'd have to go with either the "Mercenary Thanes" that can get the gold sword upgrades, or else the Elite Seleukid Spearmen with like 38 armor, whose name I can't remember.

edit: sorry if this is posted already elsewhere. I haven't seen it.

You mean the Thorakitai Agematos Basilikou?

These are real killahs:

Sreni Pattya Yoddaha, elite Indian guild warriors. Don't expose them to prolonged arrow fire, though! They have epic AP swords.

and

Thraikioi Rhomphaiaphoroi. Can take a punch and have killing AP swords. However, I've seen the Sreni take on the Rhomphaiaphoroi on front and win.

Where exactly are the Thraikioi Rhomphaiaphoroi recruited? I thought they were Getai? But I don't see them in the recruitment viewer for them.

Yeah those Thraikioi Rhomphaiaphoroi are pretty damn tough stood there ground against my one unit of Galatian 'Wild Men' mercenaries + one unit Elite Hellenistic infantry (pelstatai I think there called) at the gates of a settlement and wiped out 50% of each unit!!! Mind you my general had no command stars and the AI's had 8

Rhomphaiaphoroi can be recruited in Tylis and Serdike (and maybe Naissos, unsure about that), with a level 4 or 5 regional MIC.

Ya all three of those settlements, thats why when I play as a Mak, I take Serdike ASAP, these guys mixed with MAK inf is insane.

Oh and BTW my favorite isnt the best per say but theyre damn good none the less.

Of course im bias, Carthage is my fav faction, I love getting revenge. And historicly I feel sorry for the Carthaginians, what happened to them totally sucks.

These guys are great too, if you ever play Lusotannan they can be recuited from one of the Northern Iberian settlements.

Oh and the Casse can recruit Dubosaverlacia from the southern settlement in Ireland. Theyre nice units too!

Those three and Kallatis as well.

Best Cost Effectiveness: Thraikioi Peltastai. Everyone knows about these guys, so nuff said.

Best Pure Stats: Dosidataskeli

Best Skin: Hmm hard one, I'm going with these guys.

The AP attribute of these two units is inarguably a powerful weapon, but these two units have relatively low armour. Pedites Extraordinarii have 10 attack with the AP attribute and 28 armour, with an especially large shield, making them stronger than Sreni Pattya Yoddaha as well as the Thraikioi Rhomphaiaphoroi, which have a much lower defence rating (I believe it's 24 for the Thracians). The Thracians on the other hand, have 11 attack if I am not mistaken.

Another very strong infantry unit is the Cordinau Orca with 17 attack and 30 defence (if I am not mistaken):

My favourite! The level 5 MIC in Singidunum, Scorcouw never ceases training them! Although the Cordinau Orca have considerably lower defence than Thorakitai Agematos Basilikou they do have more attack (especially since spear units receive a -4 attack penalty when engaged with sword infantry).

P.S. can anyone tell me where I can get the right unit stats for all the EB v1.1 units? I keep having to say "if I am not mistaken" because the EB Units list seems to be outdated or incorrect and I can't remember every single stat from the game itself.

Thorakitai Agematos Basilikou (Hellenic Elite Spearmen)
They also look cool

And these guys for the most beautiful skins
Somatophylakes Strategou (Baktrian Early Bodyguard)

Indohellenikoi Eugeneis Hoplitai (Indo-Greek Noble Hoplites)

I just marvel at the detail that has gone into these skins (and all the rest). Some battles I find myself pausing to spend 10 minutes just looking at the soldiers from every conceivable angle. This really is a beautiful mod!

I'd have to go with Kluddargos. Protect them from cavalry charges and they can mow down damn near anything.

Have them fight then and then see if you think the same. The Thracian's/Indian's over double lethality * .285 to .11* compared to the PE means they will rip them up. In several tests, they qon by at least 30 men left, thats with getting hit by 3 volleys of javs.

As for the stats, the only 100% right ones are in the EDU.

Also yea Kluddargos are great. Like Sreni/Rhompnaiapnoroi but with even higher attack.

British 2 handed swordsmen. A champion unit, so they get an eagle too. I need to play a Casse campaign again for these guys....

Best? There's no 'best' unit in game. If you are expecting lots of men in tins; go with the nasty AP-weapon guys (incidentally: the Milnaht are very effective against those too - big shield, great javelineers, very skilled, very lethal, high morale); but if you are expecting to fight levies with javelins they're not so great. Then I'd take the Hypaspistai, Peltastai Makedonikoi and Thorakitai Agematos Basilikou any day. Or elite Phalangitai.

For cost effective you'll be looking at the guys from Iberia, Caetrati/Caetratannan; and from the Belgae, Milnaht and Spearmen; from the Greeks it'll be their phalanxes and hoplites; from the nomadic units it'll be their HA.

i'm shipping caetrati and dunaminaca from iberia all the way to asia to fight the AS, they are absolute killers D=
done properly, the measly caetrati can actually shred the AS thorakitai Aegama basilikos...

well, I don't really think there is a "best" unit. that said, i do believe there is a "prettiest infantry":

no unit is ugly, mind you. even the pantodapoi look neat in EB.

Do Pedites Extraordinarii have AP attribute? Why doesn't it say effective against armour on their unit detail page then?

they carry a kopis, thats an AP weapon

In my current sweboz campaign i have discovered that the samnitici milites are really good infantry i really love them and they helped me to conquer gaul, also the mori gaesum and the spatagaurdoz(german pikeman)are really awesome, and well the ligurian infantry is really good they can hold the line really well, and i have to mention the german bodyguard infantry those are amazing as well.

I really like the traikioi romphaiaphoroi but i feel its like cheating i once used them and they cut through any heavy infantry like a hot knife cutting through butter, so those units i mentioned are so far the infantry i like the most, oh and i forgot to mention the dunaminaca those guys are really hard too!

Actually, their recruitment has been disabled in the latest versions. They are only available in custom battles.
