    Default Anyone for Diplomacy?

I don't know how many of you - if any - are familiar with Dip. but its' an excellent game and I'd be happy to GM a game if anyone is interested.

Please post below if you'd like to play. If you have no Dip experience then you will DEFINITELY need to read up on the rules

    BEWARE!

Diplomacy games are notoriously long-winded and often take several months to complete. While I am happy to GM for n00bs, there is nothing more frustrating than people who decide to drop out during a game - it is very difficult to find willing replacements and can really ruin the dynamics of what is a delicately balanced game system to begin with . Therefore, please only sign up if you are committed to participating no matter what; and you are prepared to acquaint yourselves with the rules.

All that aside - if you haven't played Dip before, I can only say that it is very different to most other games you will be used to, and it is TEH BESTEST FUN.

We need 7 players to sign up. feel free to ask questions about how the game works once you've had a look at those links. B

I guess this thread can be binned if we don't get 7 sign-ups - as per normal mafia set up. No worries - there are plenty of places to play Dip online. :)

and if we use phpdip - then I can play too! yay!

Never played it, but I think I might take a chance (though I must know the time deadlines and such) since on many weekends I will not be able to post since, I study away from home and on the weekends I have no chance of going to a computer.

You can use this. We used that for quite a few games a few months back.

Hi shlin, we haven't met, but i just read atpg's Golden rule thread today so i feel like i know you a bit already

I haven't seen that php app before - I might give that a whirl myself. I usually use realpolitik

    http://realpolitik.sourceforge.net/

to adjudicate games. It is also an invaluable tool as a player, so you can play out moves ahead and practice potentially strategies.

This looks really cool, boudica, and it's certainly a game I'd be interested in. However, I cannot be sure that I will have the time to dedicate to it, as I am often randomly afflicted with bouts of real life from time to time. I will therefore have to regretfully decline my full joining of the game.

So, I will say this: you can put me down as an "understudy" of sorts- if you can't get a seventh player, or someone drops out midway through the game, I will be happy to fill that spot for you. Until then, however, I will yield to anyone who has the time to pay full attention to the game.

Hi Jolt & Ares - thanks for showing interest.

No problem about the weekend thing. Typically, Dip games can run as slowly as one 'turn' a week, as there is plenty of private diplomacy to be conducted via PM/email between players.

Each game year is split into 5 separate phases:

    Spring > Move Orders
    Summer > Retreats (if necessary)
    Fall > Move Orders
    Autumn > Retreats (if necessary)
    Winter > Adjustments

Normally online games take two weeks to complete this cycle of phases.
    Tues. - Spring Orders
24 hours later Summer Retreat orders.
the following Tues - Fall orders
24 hours later - Autumn retreat and then another 24 hours until Winter adjustments are due.

Games can run quicker - sometimes players can become bored with the slow pace initially - but sooner or later you really need that time to talk to everyone!

Anyway - as i said in the first post - it's a great game, but really not for everyone. Have a good look at the rules before signing up.
