    Default Get out of Houston

    Please!http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/weather/0...xas/index.html

Its made a slight turn and now its about to be a direct hit. LEAVE! I fear this storm. Houston is home to nearly 6 million and is pretty much on the same sea level as NO. Not to mention no one has really left the city even with this 700 mile wide behemoth

My brother lives in downtown Houston, but he's at least 50 feet above sea level. He's staying. According to him, he's got a full tank of gas, propane, canned goods, lots of water, a Beretta 92 and plenty of ammo. I just hope the roof of his house stays on.

Galveston is supposedly going to take the brunt of this whole thing. The whole metropolitan area is massive. Look at the logistical/beaurcratic problems with NO and times it by ten I dont like this a bit.

It's not only going to nail Houston metropolis area head on. But go directly through the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolis also, predictions have the storm weakening to only 40-50 mph sustained winds by the time it hits north Texas. It's going to rip right through the populated triangle of Texas, affecting well over 50% of the people in the 2nd most populous state....

Not to mention the fact that north texas is the most direct escape route for evacuee's from houston. Ike rolling across packed interstates would be disastrous.

I hear people in Houston itself are being asked to stay. Over 100 people died in the evacuation of Rita. Those on high ground in the city will probably be ok.

Those on the coast though need to leave. When your weather service claims you will suffer almost certain death, it is time to go.

    Good luck.

    *edit*

From the CNN article linked in the OP:

Residents living in single-family homes in some parts of coastal Texas face "certain death" if they do not heed orders to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Ike's arrival, the National Weather Service said Thursday night.

I hope those that can leave do so, this storm combined with high tide and rain is going to be bad. Many will be losing electricity and it could be for a couple of weeks in some areas. Imagine going without AC & a refrigerator for that long...the comfort level many of us take for granted will be seriously impacted. Hang in there Texas... you all are in my prayers!

For the rest of us; go fill up your vehicles' gas tank now...prices are spiking big time.

We're learning the limits of logistics the hard way. You can only pack so many cars on a freeway. Throw in the inevitable vehicle breakdowns and you will have one of the largest traffic jams in human history if Houstan evacuates.

This is a friendly shout out from Florida, thanks for taking Ike off our hands! Now I just have to deal with the $5 a gallon gas here....

I'm just waiting for Chuck Norris to drop down into the hurricane via C-130 air drop and kick it's ass all the way back to Cuba...

    Good luck Houston.
