The multi-phase bridge defense was the second hardest part of the game for me. The final boss was the worst. Both sections asked the player to run like a nutter and do a lot of accurate aiming in all sorts of directions with little margin for error. Sounds reasonable. The problem? I could either have my movement controls set up the way I wanted or my aiming controls, not both. One of the two always had to be 'backwards' because of the way the camera settings were handled.
I found the rifle to be my best friend. Powerful, accurate, not too bad to reload. A single headshot will drop most enemies. That's how I eventually passed the bridge defense section. You'll acquire better rifles as you progress, to the point where they are quite godly. Once I got the pair of pistols I used them frequently.
