Did you find out how to give them the melee bonus?

The "spear" attribute gives -4 to attack vs. infantry "light_spear" gives -4 to defense vs. infantry. I would recommend using "light spear", since the phalanx was brutally effective against enemy infantry, but when confronted with a soldier right next to him, a hoplite with such a long spear will be at a defensive disadvantage. First of all, you cannot parry with a spear and secondly, such a long spear would be quite an impediment.

Well, I don't need to give them any melee bonus for their secondary weapon (sword) because they have better attack for it than most phalangites, so they should, in theory, be superior sword fighters (I'll have to try it out in custom battle).Currently they have phalanx formation, with shorter spears than macedonian phalangites, light_spear attribute and are better with their secondary weapon... I'm pretty satisfied with them right now.
