I shall reaffirm my previous position. A pie is a work of art, containing a great range of ingredients; it can be a dinner piece, a dessert, even a breakfast if you count Quiche (not in Europe, but it would work in America, where eggs are a breakfast staple.) A cake is a pile of nasty sweet bread with grotesque cloying frosting on top.

[pedantic]I beg to differ. It's not called a pie in Italy so it's not a pie. Also just because something has a misnomer, and a lot of foods fall into that category, does not mean it should fall into that class.[/pedantic]

Definitely pie (dessert,the good ol' Caribbean meat pie, some classic Brit versions, etc.)
