A corrupted save is a safe bet. To avoid savegame corruption in MTW avoid the pre battle save, the quicksave and loading from the autosaves. All of these are prone to corruption. If your game has a tendancy to crash when you esc to the main menu do make a quicksave first then go to the main menu and save normally. This gives you the quicksave to fall back on in case the game crashes at the main menu.

Also as a rule try to save at the very beginning of a new turn before any moves at all are made.

Another possible cause for this is a corrupted sound file. So it may be an idea to reinstall the game anyway.
