    Default Nostalgia for RTW

Anyone else get what I mean?

I haven't picked the game up in several months, probably closer to a year, really, and then all of a sudden I get the urge to kill some Gauls a few days ago. Fast-forward to now and I'm listening to the music from the game's credits on Youtube, going back over AARs, and deciding whether I want to pick up my old Scipii campaign, start a new game as a Romans, or go back to my beloved Carthaginians. Unfortunately, I'm at school and my game's at home so I'll be pining for another month.

It's the urge to just pick the game up and play for hours on end. You just don't get that with M2TW, IMHO. Anyone else get the feeling?

Completely and utterly. I recently purchased a copy after weeks of plotting a campaign. Then one day playing a Final Fantasy game I saw "Known for keeping a woman in every town" which made me want to go construct a web of SUBTERFUGE and so I bought it. It's never that exciting, though.

I understand you exactly! For a long time I didn't played TW games at all. Then started to play MTW2 but something was still missing. Didn't had the right feeling. After I played RTW again.. well.. I just had to play another campaign, do anothe Carthage/Rome extermination and so on.

Have to say that Rome have something that makes it interesting even if you haven't played it for a long time. Even if you just play Vanilla it is interesting(how could arcani super warriors and flaming pigs be not interesting ). I don't feel the same for MTW2.

Same right here. Installed again a few weeks ago. It was an urge to just...be in the roman setting. I love roman soldiers.

Oh brother, even after so many years I still have to fight the urge not to leave my girlfriend and other social interactions for what they are and lock myself up in a room with nothing but rtw and gallons of the good old H2O and maybe some cornflakes (the ones with the monkey on them) just to keep me from starving to dead.
Only one more game comes close to do this sort of damage to my live and that’s civilization.
Sometimes I’m able to leave it be for a couple a months but then that craving once again kicks in and once again I loose all control.
Kicking the gauls out of the Italian peninsula, destroying the carthegian fleet and invading the greek lands over and over again is all I really want to do with my live.
But must resist, have to live!

Same deal with smoking I guess; once an rtw player always an rtw player.

Its funny, I purchased M2TW not long ago and immediately got bored... I sold it 2nd-hand on Amazon.

I liked it and I'll give it another go if its released budget price. But it didn't addict me instantly and make me want to get a spear and run people through and torch their houses like RTW did.

This kind of nostalgia, plus the dearth of any good deep games, is the reason I keep popping old game after old game into my CD drive. Happens to me all the time. In fact, almost no new games have gripped me for over a year, easily. I pretty much just cycle through old games these days based upon what wave of nostalgia hit me this month.

Exact same here. I also go through such cycles. For instance, for the last year I have been playing Europa Barbarorum but since I began watching PrinceofMacedon's MP battles on YouTube, I have gotten this strange feeling for RTW again. I mean, EB is waaaay better and yet somehow I feel the need to play the good ol', historically inaccurate RTW lately. What are your favorite games? If you visit my profile it will say there.

I basically can categorise my life by what game I was playing at certain times and I have nostalgic feelings for each era. I've been playing RTW again recently, amassing several Carthaginian uber-stacks right now.

I agree fully, there's something about M2TW that makes it get boring real fast. For all my hype to get it, after I finally had my hands on it I got bored after doing a Spanish and a Turkish campaign. Dug up my old RTW CD right after and started looking around for my old favourite mods.

It's funny, really. I've been playing Starcraft a lot lately, but recently I reinstalled Rome, and decided I didn't want to try any mods. All I did was get Mundus Magnus's expanded campaign map and played a virtual game of vanilla. I've been doing it for the past two weeks now.

There's something... Pure about Vanilla. Lyrics from the song in the credits:

    How can I await unknowing?
This is the price of war.
    We rise with noble intentions,
And risk all that is pure.
We're only as great are our hearts will allow us.
    What awaits us?

I can just play Rome and... immerge myself in it.

It's been long time, both form this forum and the Game. Yeah, I got hooked again with RTW lately. Just can't stop playing the campaign again.

It's funny that 3 years ago people were saying how they can't enjoy playing RTW and invoking the nostalgia for MTW or even STW again. It must be the times, eh? must keep up with the times...

    Talking Re: Nostalgia for RTW

My sis and most my friends think i'm crazy when i play on the game and they're watching. I got so into battles i find myself barking commands and threatening certain soldiers with execution when we get back to base.....if we get back to base. I sometimes get so involved i find them talking to me and i dnt relise for a long time. Other games dont do that for me. Just RTW!
