I am a newbie, bear that in mind!

Refrain from attacking Catholic factions, bribe the pope and reward him. You'll eventually be reconciled by the pope quicker by paying him.
Thanks!
At this very moment I am sending a diplomat to him, although this may take a while as I am playing as Hungary.

Hmm...
I sent a diplomat and gave The Pope many gifts. Now I keep trying to request reconciliation and he keeps refusing...![]()

If you're not broke then keep on giving him single payments of florins, this should improve your relations gradually. Give him a region if you can, and stop fighting other fellow Catholics. Last resort you could try to assasinate the pope, or you could also kill you faction leader then you'll sure to be reconciled.
Well, my faction leader died and I was reconciled... but I am at war with denmark, and the pope will excommunicate me again unless I make peace. I keep trying to, but Denmark refuses... I even offer them floriens, lots of floriens...![]()

You do NOT need to make peace against Denmark, as long as you do not attack them directly then you're safe from excommunication. In the mean time, lavish gifts and florins on the Pope and improve your relations so you won't get excommunicated straight away next time.

Just do not attack inside the turn limits he gave you, then you'll be fine. Anyway the Pope can be bribed, giving him money...

Well, good point. I will refrain from attacking and give the Pope money all the while.

I don't think this has been mentioned, but you may still defend your self against attacks by Denmark with out violating the Pope's non-aggression mission. Even if they besiege one of your cities, you may still attack the besieger with an outside force with no penalty.
This also invites the tactic of constantly marching through their territories and positioning your armies next to theirs in the field with the idea of baiting them into attacking you first.
You may also get lucky and get a message that your opponent has been ex-communicated so the pope no longer cares if you attack them at length. However, you must act quickly on this decree since they will usually reconcile in a short number of turns.
Cheers

I like that plan. but what really annoys me is I will be excommunicated if I attack, but not if Denmark attacks me. Is this because I was the one who attacked them first by taking Hamburg?
