I play IBFD. Basically a late-Roman version of EB, but with less depth and somewhat less balaced.

Only EB and Napoleonic 2 (or was it Napoleon II)
Though I also have installed Roma Surrectum and RTR 6 both of em' great mods , but I always come back to the historical accuracy of EB (RTR6 is a little old by now... not so great models)

I play Broken Crescent on M2TW for when I need a break from the classical age. Reliving medieval warfare is a good time-killer.

That which does not kill me makes me stronger ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
When you smoke the herb, it reveals to yourself ~ Bob Marley
When i get done with my current Saka campaign, i'll probably either do another Casse campaign, or look for a new mod to try for a bit. i love EB to death, but i'm itching to try a new game. i just don't know what yet.![]()
I stay true to EB. However, I have been looking at Invasio Barbarorum as well as RTR before I chose to download EB. Roam Surrectum might also be a good mod to try - when all other mods fail or become boring that is. Just kidding. Roma Surrectum is a very lively and complete mod but historical accuracy doesn't seem to be one of its main points. It is probably is true that it will be my last resort, but it isn't because RS is so bad, it just doesn't fit my tastes. EB is the absolute best RTW mod and the best computer game that I have ever played, but despite ths, every game has its end.
Eventually I will have to try another mod (although probably by the time I'll grow bored of EB, all of the other RTW mods will be long gone - so I better download them now, while they are still available)
So how is RTR and Invasio Barbarorum? I was wondering if I could get some feedback from people who actually played it. How's the gameplay, the historical accuracy, the units, the strat map & traits system?
BTW: I have a feeling this thread will be closed down soon. Seems to be a bit off topic although very interesting. (after all, this is the EB forum)
Is there a bronze age mod? i used to play an awesome bronze mod for civ2.
I want Hittites, Mittani, Assyria, Babylon, Middle Kingdom, Sea Peoples, Achaeoi, Minoans, Phrygians.
Yeee HAaaaa![]()
There's the "Troy : Total War" mod for the Bronze Age. Only Greece and Anatolia, though, and not too complex. Then there's "Rise of Persia", not the Bronze Age but its a mod that takes place before the RTW/EB time period.
I used to play a bunch of other mods but I haven't really played anything but EB for more than a year.
I played RTR...
then RS1.5...
then IBFD...
then EB0.81a...............................
then EB1.0............................................................................................... .......
then IBFD...(keep on CTD) though I love the late roman empire, especially the losing WRE
then EB1.1............................................................................................... .............(endless)
"." means the time I spend playing the MOD.
And definitely I will buy a new PC and play EBII.
I mainly play EB but there are some terrific mods out there, IBFD is very good but a problem with the script means i had to revert to an earlier version that only uses 2 turns per year, its still a great mod though. Also its related mods are good .
RTR 6 was my favourite mod for a long time but has been well beaten by EB and seeing as its the same time period theres no point in playing anymore.
Paeninsula Italica looks very promising, the beta has just been released but its not complete yet(for instance all the cities have the same population etc, there are some great units and a superb map of italy though.
Stainless steel for M2TW is pretty good but i dont like how archers are so weak. and i am anticipating the release of King and Country(ECW mod) the previews are excellent and it will be released about november.
Goth
I play, and recommend, IBFD.
- Gamplay is very fine (even though I had restatted the units according to the EB tables, but that's a matter of preferences).
- Accuracy is excellent, as far as I know about these things (don't ask me details on the 5th Century Berbers or the White Huns). For the Romans you have tons of different units to recreate the Late Roman Army according to the Notitia Dignitatum. And also the Barbarians all have their unique units and are not a collection of uniform "warbands".
- The units are fine (some glitches, but can live with, and they are still worked on). For example you have a lot of different Comitatenses Legions depending on where you recruite them. No more Vanilla BI units, as far as I have seen.
- The start map has the size of the one of EB (from Ireland to India), province maximum seems to be reached. Interessting trick that has factions hording even though they controll settlements. descr_strat has some problems with FMs not attached to the family tree.
- The trait system seems to be the one of Vanilla BI. But there are a number of new ancillaries representing the Roman offices (Dux, Comes, Magister Militum). Some were allready in Vanilla BI, but several are new in IBFD.
1-so I'm not the only one who did that, eh?
2-the arabs (lakhmids) are being remade along more historical lines by JH with the help of Gen.James Wolfe, (straight swords, little to no silk, accurate garb) for IBFD: IJ 3. the romans have been reskinned by JH and the sassanids were reskinned by JH with the help of a certain Gaiten (in the twcenter). as for the berbers, JH is planning on making a version for Alexander total war, so as to get around the model limit, and then do the berber. you might even see a new model for Julianus' lonesome in the Alex version.![]()
So, I too recmmend IBFD: It is a very good mod now, and will be even better later on![]()

- Invasio Barbarorum: Flagellum Dei
- Rome - Total Realism: Platinum Edition [with MNM and ExRM (depends on what I feel like)]
- Roma Surrectum 1.5
- Rise of Persia (playing it now, actually)
This space intentionally left blank.
I wanted to try out RTR, so I did. But when I installed it, I relised about half way through that I had installed it over my data folder...so now I can't play EB until I re-install it
But as for RTR, it's like vanilla rome with new units and stuff. Nice, but IMO it's not EB.

Napoleonic TW2, but just occasionally. I am a rather poor MPer.

to all the people suggesting IBFD- while I agree it's fun does no one find that Roman units have too much morale, whereas other factions have none? I remember routing entire armies of barbarians and reconquering spain with too much ease. also whilst i loved the number of units the romans could field there were too many, some of which could only be trained in certain settlements, which made me end up losing entire units of men as i wasn't able to retrain them. personally it wasn't for me.
recently i've discovered another BI timeframe mod called "Age of Darkness." It's considerably old (at least 3 years) and whilst it shows on the map i love the gameplay- playing as the WRE i'm yet to be backstabbed by the ERE as in vanilla and the AI is fairly decent in battles. If you want a mod from BI's timeframe that extends the map slightly, has better gameplay and is generally more fun, i honestly recommend it![]()
Pull the trigger and hope it clicks
For the past 5 months i only played EB, and or tried minor mods like Troy and Chivalry. Goth may well remember his mod Imperium Julianorum, right now a new version is being made with more accurate Roman units and shield patterns according to the Notitia Dignitatum, its much more fun than IBFD.
Cheers.
I tend to try out many mods as I stumble upon promising ones, although mostly for a short time and seemingly always with a return to EB, but for the time being I´m having a lot of fun with FATW, a lore-based fourth age Middle-earth mod, as even though I´m not much for fiction I´ve always loved Tolkien´s books. I have also tried out LOTR:TW, another Middle-earth mod, but rather based on the movies, quite a good mod no matter what one may hold against the hollywood interpretation and rendition, I prefer FATW though.
Other quality RTW mods I have played much in the past are RTR, RS and Napoleonic TW2 which is the only of the three I still play, but I´m currently taking a few of you on the word and downloading IBFD and from what I´m reading on their forums it is a mistake I haven´t done so before.

RTR 6 by itself is really old, PE (platinum edition) is what followed, then there are 2 more "major" mods of it that are ExRM (extended realism mod) and Imperator Metro & Naval. There is also a "mini" mod from AqD. Both ExRM add AqD's mods are still being worked on but not by the RTR team.
The RTR team released a mod based on the invasion of Iberia by Hamilcar Barca (RTR VII: The Iberian Conflict) which is a lot of fun, though, i never got to finish it before my video card passed away
They are also working on RTR VII: Fate of Empires of which you can see the previews (and all the mods said) in http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=26
out of experience, i've only been able to try PE and ExRM, and i enjoyed them both, but the first one had some issues that were mostly fixed with ExRM.
I doubt any other mod has as much depth as EB, so it will be easy to be disappointed with other mods, but they are no less because of that.
"Kaneda! What do you see?"
This is so true. The units are made in 512 and can kill most videocards, but we must go with technology.
Mods that I played and can recommend besides EB are:
RTR/BI:
- RTR
- Invasio Barbarorum
- Rise of Persia
- The Crusades
M2TW:
-Broken Crescent
* I am waiting anxiously for Hegemonia and maybe a mod of Alexander to be released.
you can in theory hae them all in one rome-total war folder. but it is safer to have multiple copied of Rome-total war, and spread the mods between them. I have IBFD RR with EB, rise of persia too. and in antother fil, I have chiv (I'm a meber), napoleonic2, rio's mod of IBFD, and in yet another folder, I have I. Julianorum, EW (it a closed beta), and a few others. yes, I have as few as six mods, all historical.
I have one more slot ready, for the final IBFD mod: restitutor Orbis
@Recoil: that's because. roman legions are supposed to be that good, as there is no evidence of a decline in the infantry's skill (look at Julianus' battle vs. the Alemanni, or the siege of Amida, or even Adrianople). and the veriety is due to the fact that the romans had been ruling the place for 400 yrs by then, and had obviously evolved new unit types (comitatenses, limitanei, and they're countless individual types), to cope with the realities of the time.
as for lack of diversity: when IJ 3 comes out, the lakhmids will have 5 different types of cavalry (and one extra, to represent extra cavalry directly drawn from the nomads). they will also have 3 types of infantry, categorized by experience(and money)![]()

Though I have been taking a rather long break from playing RTW and some of the outstanding mods for it. My two favorites have always been EB and FATW. IMO, these 2 mod teams are as damn near professional as it gets in terms of end product released. FATW is to Tolkien Lore and the fantasy genre what EB is to the Classical/Roman Era without the script. Though the EB team has essentially moved on to the EB II project for MTW2 as I understand it. FATW is still adding content to their just as fantastic mod, also as I understand it. Two great mods, that have put forth excellent products, with outstanding talented personnel that make up each respective team to boot. My two favorites by far.
I´ve just started playing the newly announced Viking Invasion II, a brilliant sequel to the classic Medieval add-on considered by many, myself included, as the masterpiece of the Total War series :
http://www.topnotchmods.net/mods/vi2/
And I highly recommend it.
The late Roman Army loved to use soldiers far away from their homelands (the exact opposite of what players would do). So you have a couple of, for example, Illyrians in the army on the Euphrates, Asian cavalry along the Danube, Germans in Africa and such things. A logistical nightmare in a RTW game. I would adwise to use them up and replace them with locals as soon as possible. Don't bother with trying to retrain them (in many occasions you won't even have the settlements where they came from). A problem are in fact the large number of different Comitatenses with very small AOR; so cannot retrain in Alexandria a Legion that was originally raised in Athens.
I'm surprised that no one's mentioned 58BC: Caesar Imperator yet. It's a great mod, you'll get to conquer Gaul and then crush Pompey, playing as Caesar. It's mission driven, and heavily scripted. I suggest that you give it a try.
I want to test Ran No Jidai
but i don´t get my ass in action to stop my current eb-games
