    Default Offense as defense

Trying a new philosophy, "the best defense is a good offense".

I only train archers for bridge provinces, everything else is attack troops, horses, monks and yari sams. When I get attacked I'll preposition my units right up in the attackers grill, when the whistle blows I go all out and try to rout them off of the battlefield. So far it has worked very well. The advantages are that I don't have to reconfigure the province to attack the depleted forces that I just routed and I don't have to spend a lot of money on defensive troops.

    I love this game!!

Another good tactic is to capture enemy provinces bordering yours for just one turn, and dismantle all the buildings. You can do this in Shogun without having to capture the castle. You can continue in deeper if your enemy's heavy building provinces aren't near your border. It sets them back a few turns, at the very least, to be able to produce any new troops.

Chevauchee, one of my favorite tools in a Shogun campaign when I want to keep a clan alive but control their strength (when I'm using them as a buffer against other clans while building up my own strength etc.).
    Be intent on loyalty
While others aspire to perform meritorious services
    Concentrate on purity of intent
While those around you are beset by egoism

I know what you mean, I did this in one campaign training only No-dachis and the run-and-chop tactic was surprisingly effective, especially in the early phase when there was little cavalry around. Very fun for a different experience. Also made me use the wooded areas more.
