MTW or M2TW?

For MTW Gold you can download any of the mods that run on MTW/VI as it's the same thing.

Um I'm new at modding I thought I would try it. I heard that there was a thing that let you build your own units and factions?

You need to have a read through some of the threads in the MTW Modding forum and it's subfora. There are some howtos, guides and useful threads in there.

There is no single tool available that does that. You can edit the stats of buildings and units by using a program called the gnome editor. The adding of new factions and units is a little more complex involving the adding and changing of quite a lot of files.

If you want to try a bit of modding your best starting point is to try changing a few unit names, altering some stats, adding or removing some landbridges or enabling the Sahara provinces. There are guides to all of this in that forum.
