Default Jeff Goldblum as Hannibal Barca

I've got it in my head that Jeff Goldblum would make a good Hannibal Barca in an historical epic. Does anyone agree with me? Take off the glasses and kit him up and I reckon he could be quite convincing. He has an intelligent sort of air about him which I think might come across well on screen in that he could be a military genius. From what I've read the Carthaginians were semitic and as this guy is ethnically Jewish I think he's probably got the right look...

Bit of an odd thread I know but I often wonder what the Phonecians looked like.

He doesn't seem "tough" enough for Hannibal Barca. Of course, modern Hollywood makeup specialists can do miracles...

Yeh in those photos he definately doesn't. On the EB game theres a coin with Hannibal on it. He's got a scar on his cheek and even on the coin he looks pretty hard. If they put Goldblum through one of those intense bootcamps... maybe.

Jeff Goldblum is one of my favorite actors, hes probably one of the best supporting actors there is. Usually when he has a staring role the movie bombs (except "The Fly"), but hes been a supporting actor in some great movies..

I guess this is no more bizarre than contemplating Colin Farrell as Alexander (who ended up, in my opinion and rather shockingly, playing him brilliantly)

The main reason why I thought of him playing Barca is because he actually looks like how I imagine your average Carthaginian to look like. I agree he hardly has a hard man look but Ben Kingsley can play both Ghandi and rock hard nutters very convincingly. If Goldblum's acting was excellent I reckon he could pull it off very well.

Goldblum always looked more like Seleukos VI to me.

He have some kind of intelectual air, in the style of "Ross" (David Schwimmer) from friends. He is a great actor but I think is a little away from Hannibal.
There is an upcoming movie (Hannibal the Conqueor), starring... Vin Diesel. No my idea of Hannibal, but well...
    Completed campaigns:
    1.1 Quarthadastim
    1.1 Arverni

    Actually playing:
    1.2 Koinon Hellenon

Eh, I thought that Farrell's Alexander was just a pansy weirdo with mommy issues. During the battle scenes he always looked as if he was on the verge of wetting his pants. It's not all Colin's fault though, because I doubt that Stone gave him any meaningful direction.

Hmmm...this thread could go off into the ether rather quickly if we start offering alternative reviews of "Alexander"...fun, but potentially never-ending. Oh, what the Hell...

Indeed -- he definitely DID have mommy issues that turned him into a bit of a pansy weirdo...! And a few "daddy issues" too, don't ya think? Yes, Oliver Stone took some liberty with history, but there are historical accounts that can back him up on the basics. I certainly don't claim to be an expert on the life and times of Alexander (Guy Rogers' Alexander: The Ambiguity of Greatness sits unread on my military history bookshelf), but I think the rather serious mindf#@*ing perpetrated by his father and mother during his formative years was a MAJOR influence in his conduct later in life.

Hmm I've never thought about him as Hannibal, but he does resemble him a bit.

I did a sketch of Hannibal Barca back in 2005, based on his bust:

Hmm tbh I can never imagine Goldblum seriously since all I ever think of is an impersonation of him mumbling and stuttering a lot (think Jurassic Park) so I doubt he'd work well with the script.

he sounds very confident about his project. It sounds like he has really put his sould into it, and maybe he will make it very good. Better than other directors, becouse maybe, maybe he will picture it very good becouse he know exactly where he is going and how he wwants it to be. Or maybe he will do it very bad, and it will be a very bad movie. I have never liked vin diesel.

About Collin Farrel as Alexander, i never doubted he would do it bad. I am really impressed how he made it. Dont forget it is just i movie. and maybe the most historical accurate movie made. And it entertained me. I dont think alexander movie really made out to the big audience, becouse it was too much like a documentary.

I thought that movie was total garbage! I don't think they could have picked a worse actor or a worse script. I don't think it did justice to Alexander at all.

actually, this movie reads not like a documentary; more like some long version of a dime novel, with an actual theme being the only diff.

a documentary would be something else...

but to be fair, the actors were decent (and collin was brilliant indeed), and the essential idea behind the movie good, but I believe Oliver Stone just keeps missing the point: you cannot impose modern notions on ancient concepts. the whole gay part was a particularly embarrasing example.

More importantly, who could play Julius Caesar in a modern day epic. Daniel Craig would not be bad at all.

First of all, Abou, Joaquin Phoenix is clearly the man to play Seleucus.
Second, Jeff Goldblum? No way. Clive Owen would be a safe choice. Jimmy Smits or Temuera Morrisson would be interesting, but the best man for the job by far would be ...

    Arnold Vosloo.

Plus Adam Baldwin as some Roman dude.

Ah yeh I reckon he could pull it off well. I just thought I'd like to add that I hate Alec Baldwin. For me he is the ultimate bad actor. I really do think he's pretty rubbish. He's just sort of got a B+ movie face and a slightly 'aren't I so amazing air about him.' Well that's what I get when I see him in films. I'd hate to see him cast as a Roman. Perfect way to ruin it for me.

And yeh I thought Ciaran Hinds made an excellent Caesar. I've seen both series' of Rome 3 times now. I love it so much.

I reckon Daniel Craig would have to Italianise his look a bit though.

Yeah he sounds quite passionate about it. I'm not optimistic though. I've only seen one film with Vin Diesel in it that I thought was actually a good film (some are good for tits and ass) and that was Saving Private Ryan- and he hardly has a big role in that film.

Julius Caesar was a Roman though, not a typical Italian. He'd be fair skinned, and of modest size. Craig seems to fit the build. He also takes naturally to arrogant characters and Caesar was most definitely an arrogant guy.

Oh right, so were Romans different to other Italians in appearance?

And yeh by the way, acting skills wise, I'm confident that Craig would at least do a 'good' performance. Probably an excellent one.

asshole you just totally ruined my view of jeff goldblum.

I thought that north african guy (his name totally escapes me, hes in star trek deep space nine, and battle star galatica)

was a convincing hannibal. I never saw the movie, but from the pictures it was believable.
