Thread: AS/A-Levels

    Default AS/A-Levels

What AS/A-Levels are you gonna take/are doing right now/did you take?

My school basically forces us to make a preliminary choice right now... so my current choices are:

    History - 'nuff said
Politics - Great teachers + interesting topic
Physics - Syllabus looks great (Quantum Physics )
Maths - Seems pretty easy + pretty interested in it
Philosphy - Iffy, was a choice between this or Economics, but philosophy just seems more interesting to me

I'm hoping to get into some kind of law-related career in the future, and according to my teacher me taking two essay-based subjects should be good enough. But I don't know... physics and maths just doesn't seem to fit in there, any advice(s)?

Probably Highers are the Scottish equivalent. I took English, Maths, Physics, History, and Geography.

You can take Philosophy at school?!

Philosphy is pretty new at our school though, apparently its only been done for 2 years as an A-level...

    That reminds me, I gotta do a 6th AS/A-Level too... Critical Thinking....*groan*

Don't you have to take English? At my school that was the only subject we had to do if we were doing Highers.

That's weird, maybe schools in England and Scotland are different...

A-Levels...I assume that's basically another word for that one can select ones own subjects in secondary school, or whatever one call this level of education. I study chemistry, physics, maths and geoscience. In addition to that, Norwegian, phys ed, modern history and religion and ethics are obligatory the last year.

Doing my A levels this year, did Philosophy, History, English Language and Business Studies AS levels last year. And I'm still doing all of those.

Nah, that must be wrong. I don't know exactly what an A-level is. Phys ed is once a week; religion 1.5 lessons a week. Physics 2.5 lessons a week etc. Perhaps the systems are radically different; I really got no clue.

For AS/A-Levels we have to do 5 lessons for each subject everyweek, and then there is a ridiculusly long time which I can't remember where we have to study by ourselves

On the bright side, I finally get to drop the dreaded Physical Education after nearly 5 years of torture

I got told 25 hours private study per week at Highers, what a lie.

If its your big year (or 2 for A-levels?), then they just like to hype it up, reality is its tough but not ridiculous.

Hmm, I have 22.5 (the 0.5 stems from the fact that we operate with two timetables; in one week there's no subject that lesson; the next one there is one) lessons each week, and each lesson lasts 70 minutes. Every Friday, it's subject day, which means that one have one subject the entire day. Which subject that is, can be found by counting on the timetable. If it's subject day 17 and one have no subject in lesson 17, then it's the entire day off.

I finished almost exactly a year a go. Scary thought. Good luck with the rest of your schooling.

Maths is a good choice, since it helps your brain work rationally and logically. But! I wouldn't worry too much about whether your school subjects will help you in your chosen field of Uni study and later career. Since at Uni they assume you know nothing, or near nothing, anyway. Your much better picking subjects you enjoy, because if you enjoy the subject your more likely to do well at it.

Are you serious? Haha. The day before my Chemistry Final I was playing Oblivion. Got 80 something for it.

My final year at High School I did: Modern History, Maths, Adv English, Software, Chemistry. In the preliminary year I did Extension History and German too.
