    Default Boosting performance in EB

Hi, if someone could help me boosting my EB, beacause my computer is really old. I know that many users modify themself the game files to boost performance. I did evrything to boost the performance usinfg the preferences.txt, but my problem is the strat map, consumes all my RAM (i got 1gb of RAM). Please if someone could upload or send me in an e-mail those files. I will be very thankful.

    Thanks for all!!!

A boost wich i know and i don't know the reasons why the team didn't do this, to convert all the .cas unit models to .rum. Here's a link to the converter: link

It will crash at an model(.cas) because it has both weapons set to secondary or primary, so remeber the unit model at wich it crashes and move them in another folder and after start the converter again and move them back again, the .cas at where it crashed.

It will reduce the .cas size to 2-5kb or even more depending on the model and imho it will give an 10-15% performance boost, fps wise.

Yeah but that's mainly useful on the battle field. It may not quite work out for the stratmap which is memory & CPU hungry.

You should use ALX.exe engine, that is less CPU demanding

True but still a nice boost because for the rest you can't really do anything than buy new parts or reduce the detail, like removing dense trees since that is the main reason why the strat map is so slow. So i would say it's a trio, gfx are used quite heavily.

And there are other like setting the priority with the task manager but it will cause problems.

emm what? I' sorry but I didn't understand the cas2rum thing... hehe

you'll see I have no problems with the stratmap (revert to the original sea animation ,it does wonders)

however I can't handle huge sizes, not even with lowest settings, however I can stand large sizes with 4/5 of graphical detail., so... is there a way that I could play with huge sizes?

Hi, i heard that the tree models in the strat map consumes, is there a chance to remove all the trees in the strat map??? . I will sacrifice look (in the strat map) for speed. It becomes very lagg between turns.

    HELP!!!

P.D.: i'm using the Alex.exe and the strat map in 1024*768 16bits without shadows

Well the cas2rum thing is to download that, extract it in the models_unit folder and run the .bat. Should have it explained simpler.
And after it will crash apply what i said above, the moving part.

To remove the trees go to: Rome - Total War\EB\Data\TERRAIN\AERIAL_MAP\TREE_MODELS and delete the trees .cas. Be carefull and backup first since there are also some new models that aren't in the vanila version. If there are other files then replace them with the exact name(eb name) with the vanila ones but see that they match(CYPRESS_A.CAS = eb_CYPRESS_A.CAS), wich are located in Rome - Total War\Data\TERRAIN\AERIAL_MAP\TREE_MODELS.
I hope my explanation isn't that vague...

Install the sea-graphic switch. However, this probably will not improve performance as the original graphics take up quite as much memory as the new ones.

I never tried the sea graphics switch before, but I did yesterday and I have the impression that at least the scrolling speed on the campaign map has increased by a good deal, but it might just be in my head.

the 'improvement' is an optical illustion. because the colors in the orginal sea file are lighter and have softer edges, it appears to move smoother.

I just tried the cas2rum thing. Converted all convertible cas to rum, deleted the cas (keeping a backup of course), but then EB refused to run.

Apparently a lot of non-unit models are *expected* to be in cas, even if they're convertible.

Some units failed to load as well, once converted, were expecting a tga instead of a tga.dds.

Also, some cas files instead of reporting an error during conversion just plain crashed.

To make it more usable, there should be an optional switch to automatically delete a cas file if successfully converted to rum, otherwise you have to sift through a hundred or so files to see if they need to be renamed, deleted, or whatnot.

    Totally busted and unusable.
