First of all, it's Thera. Santorini is a modern non-greek name of it, adopted lately because of it's more popular use. As for the island being Atlantis, I personally highly doubt it, as Platon clearly states it is ''beyond the <<Herakleies Steiles>> (Gibraltar)>>.

I highly doubt it too, mostly because I doubt almost all of Atlantis myth; there are so many rumors about Atlantis, both ancient and modern, that it's hard to figure out what's real anyway, and that's after discounting the absolutely crackpot outer space theories.

That said, Thera/Santorini is a fantastic place to visit. The Minoan site of Akrotiri is fantastic, and the island itself is quite beautiful. The island used to have a full circular ring and a center section (concentric circle around a point, if you will), but the volcanic blast caused it to look like a butcher's knife just cut the formation in half, causing a good portion of the the ring and part of the point to slip into the sea.

I highly recommend going there. It won't be a wasted trip.

Go to Dieppe. Stand by the waterline and look up at the town. It's a sobering and intense feeling.

When my family went there, they could tell from our accents that we were Canadian. I've never been treated with so much appreciation and respect in my life.

Also, check out the Canadian soldiers' cemetery there. To this day, there are people who go write in the registry every Sunday to thank the Dieppe raiders.

And if at all possible, before you go, try to get to the war museum in Ottawa and take a good long look at the painting "Der tote Kanadische".

I don't know when you're planning to go, but I hope you have fun! Don't forget to do some less-somber stuff too.
