Meh how do i kill Gaesatae's other than spamming them with javelins? My Legions are getting butchered by these seemingly brick wall

1 unit or 2 of Gaesatae is already terrifying, i dread the day i see a stack with about 4 or 5 of them

Equites Romani are a terrible unit for charging. They manage to kill only few soldiers per charge and won't last long in melee. Curepos is a great unit for the task if you don't have Equites Extraordinarii.

Humm archers are also good,especialy if used from the back so try somehow to have some and use two lines of infantry on them to keep them in line so one line of quality infantry and backing them something weak.

Equites Romani are weak indeed, they are great to hunt down routing enemies. To use them as a Hammer makes sense provided that 1. they attack downhill , 2. your Anvil units are strong and superior in numbers to lower the enemies moral (maybe you wait until the enemy is exhausted..), 3. you use 2 or 3 units of equites per enemy unit and most important: you draw them back if the enemy doesn't rout immediately and attack again.

Well that's why i said to move them behind the Gaesatae.
And since they don't have armour in comparission to your legions it's harder for them.

why would you have trouble? just make sure you are not using 1 unit to duke it out with those naked men! putting another infantry or use a skirmisher unit, or charge with cavalry, they all drop like flies, even with 2 hp! I find the super armored human tanks that the Seleucid get even more scary.

I just found out that KH can't recruit the wild man as a unit :(((

Why am i troubled? it's one thing if it's only a Gaesatae unit but what if they are with i don't know a stack of other units. A masive battle with them anoying Gaesatae is hard since my legions get intimidated thus lowering their ability to hold the line. The Hammer and Anvil strategy would be nice that is if my cavalry isnt pre-occupied with the enemies own cavalry.

crazii if i really have to duke it out with them i'd send 6 maniples against 1 Gaestae unit.

i made quite (surprisingly) good experiences with Equites Campanici




they manage the light cavallery of the gauls very well, i always have 3-4 Alae of them in my armies (in the camillan time).

They make the enemys cavallery rout quick in melee by attacking from 2 directions, can move fast behind the enemy, throw their javelins in the back of the bound enemy infantry and then crash in their rear.

equities campania are pretty decent, cost less then romani equites and have javelins as well.

as for the problem of gaesaetae, i especially hate it when they turn up with a large army, since in a large scale battle i can rarely get skirmishers to flank around the back, which makes the gaesaetae that much more lethal.

Exactly! ....i had a taste of how anoyingly lethal they can be in a big battle, 5 principes maniples of mine were pinned down by 1 Gaesaetae unit >.> while my main army was already having trouble holding the line against a massive barbarian army plus another anoying gaesaetae.

my only method to counter them in a big battle is to have my men overwhelm the gaesetae with pillums Lol. i'l try out the equites campacini i've been itching to recruit a unit or two.

use them, they are quite cool. what about the Eqvites Extraordinarii (Elite Heavy Cavalry of the Italic Allies)?


i'm not exactly shure about them tho, but they should be the missing Hammer for the triarii anvil

I hope you have your legions on guard mode and fire at will, they won't kill many gestatae themselves but they will die slower allowing you to defeat supporting units and get slingers etc round the back, to kill them with missles or repeated hit and run cavalry charges.

I have them on guard mode and fire at will but the gaesaetae arent the only enemy my legions have., the hundreds of other barbarians are also in need of attention. as i said mostly my cavalry is busy engaging the enemies own cavalry as for my slingers theres mostly no clear shot, i risk hitting my own units.

hm. let the barbarians come close and then attack them. just always take 1 of your units an klick it to attack another unit, until every enemy unit is attacked by at least one of yours.

if you have superior numbers let your reserves march to the flanks and push into the enemys rear.... while you work on making the enemys flank rout you have to take care of your strong center who sould hold out against the gaesaetae (well, IF they are in the center). Your cavallery goes after the enemys cav.

Just try to roll up the enemys line. Don't chase routing enemys, just go further to the center, till you can attack the gaesaetae with your "free" heavy infantery. Make sure you kill them all. Routing enemys you chase with your cav. or beat them in the next battle when they have no gaesaetae anymore.

If the gaesaetae attack your flank, make sure you have some heavy infantery there to hold out. You attack the enemy, so you choose wich unit fights wich one.

I honestly dunno what is so bad about them. of course it owns 1 v 1 (ever try to fight them when they are on those city centers? :(, they never rout!!!), but what kinda human players allow that on the open field? are you saying your army melts before you can kill off ai's cavalry and use it for rear charging? only way this could happen is if you play on very hard battle mode, when peasants can kill your elite stack. I simply don't understand the trouble you are having :() even heavy skirmishers last a pretty long time, at least more then enough for your cavalry to get free and start rear ramming.

That is if the AI charges their cavalry..... in a Big battle i mean like 2500 - 2500 it's easier said than done Lol.

in a 2500 - 2500 battle its easier to manage gaesaetae, because they make a smaller %-ual part of the army... in a 500-500 battle where half of the enemy are gaesaetae and you don't have much possibilities to surround the enemy and attack the flanks, there your men better shove off ^^

Ok now for the tip:

1st a question: How many cavarly units are u deploying to battle????
----------> If you are only sending 2 thats too few. Get at least 4. Oh and make sure your cavarly has a High Charge bonus guys like Eqvites Extraordinarii, and Curepos/Leuce Epos, or even buy some merc Prodromoi from Greece.

if you do hire greeks, STAY AWAY FROM THESSALIANS! they get 2 charges and are done and get decimated in prolonged melee(you shouldnt be using cavalry like that anyway, but repeated charges, whcih they dont do well at). freakin useless. prodromoi. or better yet use thracian prodromoi!
