Yeah, that's why I use them too. In the beginning stages of my Romani campaign I have used them extensively, as they are a superb cavalry unit that replenishes, making the bodyguards invaluable for long campaigns in far-away lands. However, two months ago, I have switched to Client Ruler generals partially because of their lower cost and partially because of their Influence and governing abilities. BTW, the client generals, despite their 30% MP (movement point) penalty travel just as fast, and sometimes faster than regular cavalry. Also, client generals always seem to amass more bodyguards.

Although most of my client ruler generals are pretty good, many with ten influence, my best non-FM general is a Mercenary Italic General who has 10 influence, 7 command, and 10 management. I have just recently adopted him and he already holds all of the offices (aedile, quaestor, praetor, tribune, etc) proceeding the consul's office. What's even more interesting is that he is a pessimistic plebeian, which gives him -5 influence.
