Chapter Twenty Five: The Burning City (Part Four)
(From the Greek book:)
Later That Day
I WILL FINISH THIS NOW!!!! Ugh!
I'm sorry for my prattling but thing have just gotten so crazy today. The Royal Army, or what's left of it, is patrolling the burning ruins of the outer city for any remaining things, risen and demons. Ive been getting so many reports of riots, insanity, carnage, and chaos out there. Of course repairing the Church isn't going as well as i had hoped either. But i need to get back to the entry. I hope i have the time to finally finish it.
As we sealed the gates after getting my cousin in, we heard the sounds of fighting still going on outside the inner walls. Small groups of men tried their hardest to survive the hell below the walls. The gates crashing closed was a signal for the people outside to stop trying to get in and find a place to hide until it was all over. I watched groups of people go into the sewers, into unburned house and flats, and i even saw a small group go into a granary.
Wherever they went the demons and risen chased them. Blood, slaughter, and chaos were everywhere. I heard men scream, women being ripped apart, and other sounds that i cant even describe, nor do i want to.
It was near the end of the second day when the things had gathered enough of their forces back together that they were able to advance upon the Julian Gate. The balistae commanders opened up upon the ranks of things and risen. But the risen continued their advance, blocking many of the shots from touching their sickening masters. How we had boiling oils ready for them when they tried to breach the gate. And try they did. They surged towards the gates in wave after wave, only to be shot down, or set aflame by the oils.
This was not what the things wanted. For our defenses quickly consumed their ranks. The more that poured in, the more that died. It was then that the things leader, Bledda, came forward and roared in some evil, demonic language. It then got off of its horse and marched towards the gates. The balistae opened fire immediately. However before they could touch it, it said other sickening words, and the bolts bounced off of a bubble of fire that could only be seen when something hit it. We tried EVERYTHING to break it, balistae bolts, javelins, dead bodies, EVEN onrager rocks. NOTHING worked. It kept coming closer and closer. The waves of risen pulled back and out of its way. It came closer and closer.
It finally got to the gates. Then we dumped nearly all of the remaining boiling oils, large rocks, and javelins we had onto it. When the smoke cleared, we saw that we had not even touched it. It laughed a demonic laugh at us. Then it raised its hand, and began a vile chant. After nearly an HOUR of it doing this, with us throwing everything we had at it, it finished its chanting and put its hand to the gates. The gates exploded.
When they went down, it also blasted the troops behind the gates into the dust. Thankfully many of the men had the sense to get out of the way of the flying gates and subsequent fire blasts. However it was then that the risen POURED into the gates. Many of the men guarding the gates fought like mad dogs. However it was only a matter of time before they were overwhelmed by the mass of risen. The people in the streets fled screaming for the catacombs beneath the Hagia Sofia. I ordered my guards to protect the doors once we got in everyone that we could.
At this point i descended the stairs to the ground floor to try and organize the removal of my cousin from the monsters path. But Bledda came STRAIGHT for the Hagia Sofia. However when it tried to open the doors and found them locked it tried to attack the doors with its magics. Somehow its magics had no effects on the building. I silently prayed thanks to God. However it then became enraged and started grabbing risen, and, with inhuman strength, it began to fling them at the doors. After nearly five minutes of flinging risen at the doors they finally gave way. It then tried to walk into the Church. However the hands of God pushed it back. At this it became enraged, and barked a harsh cry. Then the power that had protected the Church shattered into a million shards of light which rained onto the floor. At this point i began to cry, a pleading desperation took a hold of me. I prayed as the thing approached. At that moment i thought that i was going to die.
It stepped around the light fragments, but it did not kill me. It didn't even seem to see me. It appeared to be hunting for something else instead.
But i must once again leave off for the pile of reports to sift through has grown too large for the priests whom are helping me with it.
