    Default Popularis or Optimas

I was wondering, is there any way to influence whether your generals will gain the "optimas" or "popularis" trait? If I were to put a general with neither of these traits in a city with a popularis governor, would he be more likely to pick up that trait as well? I'm curious because I've got a general I'm trying to work towards the Marian reforms and he hasn't chosen sides yet. -M

For "Popularis" building a Temple of Ceres with the FM in a settlement works well, but I've personally only ever come across it happening to a Plebian candidate never a Patrician.

i don't know if this has an effect or just is coincidence, but a triumphus seems also to be quite good for "popularis"

Yes doing most things that increase the glory of Rome win battles, take settlements will make someone popular, but the temple of Ceres has always been a dead cert for me. I'll be honest and say I do use it as an exploit when your after the Marian reforms.
I'd be interested to know if a Patrician has ever achieved it.

    My experience as well.

I now have a 23-year-old plebian with the Popularis trait, a load of influence, and I just got him his first command star in Cisalpine Gaul. Just a few more battles to get that second star, and with a nomination to consul I'll be off to the Marian reforms.

Just wanted to point out, Tarkus, that your general is going to need a third star as well - the list of required traits for the Marian reforms lists "more than 2 command."

hmm...it really sucks because it seems like most of my family members are patricians. Then there's the fact that I've already got a family member who has all the required traits EXCEPT popularis! hmm...maybe I'll just cheat to give him the popularis trait. Would that be workable and/or honorable? -M

well maybe if he is unselfish you can role play he got this trait by caring for the big masses, there have been a few examples of people of the upper class who wanted a better life for the common people

well he is unselfish, so I have that going for me.

How would I go about adding the trait?

I know the forumula is give_trait"character""trait""level number", but how would I apply it to the character? woud it be:

    give_trait"SpvrivsFabivsAmbvstvs""popularis"

    give_trait"Spvrivs_Fabivs_Ambvstvs""popularis"?

    or:

    give_trait"Spvrivs_Fabivs_Ambvstvs""popularis""1"

    or:

    give_traitSpvrivs_Fabivs_Ambvstvspopularis

It seems like there's any number of ways to do it. I tried the first and second ways I mentioned, but they had no effect. Does anybody know how this should be done? -M

Oops...you're absolutely right, Mulceber...I got a bit sloppy with my description there. Thanks much for pointing that out! He's a bad-ass young lad, so hanging out in Cisalpine Gaul for a couple years as cavalry commander under my grizzled veteran barbarian-slasher Aulus Gallicus should help mightily with the command experience. Thanks again!

OK, that makes intuitive sense...I was just hoping that being the #2 guy behind the only general I have that received a Triumph in the streets of Rome may have served a similar purpose. Instead I guess I'll have to ship him off to the east to field his own army...

No problem, always happy to help.

So anyway, does anybody know how to properly enter the "give trait" cheat? I've tried all the variations on that I can think of, but the game keeps telling me it doesn't recognize the character. -M

The family names are found in a certain file. They do not match the character's displayed name. This is a bother for me too, but I can't remember which file you need to examine has the info you need.

hmm...I just found the list you were talking about - it had a list of all the roman first names, followed by "a", then repeated itself, only replacing the "a" at the end with a b, then a "c" and kept on doing it until "k," at which point the list ended. Sorry if I'm not particularly programming-literate, but what does this mean? Is it a list of all the family members in my saved games who have had those particular names? If that were the case, one of the spurius's would refer to the character I want to alter, correct?

Anybody know how I take this list and use it to modify a character in EB? Again, sorry if I'm not programming-literate, but I think I may be in a bit over my head. -M

I'm on my work computer right now, so I don't have access to my EB build. I don't remember exactly how the names in descr_names map to the actual names in the game, but each of those "firstname_letter" labels corresponds to a FM in the game. There are ways to figure out what maps to what, and these have been discussed in other threads. Just do a search on "give_trait" and you should get the help you need (and that I can't give you at the moment). For example, this link should be helpful.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, Tarkus. I decided to try modifying the conditions. After some digging around in the export_descr_character_traits.txt file, I found the following clause:

    Code:
    Trigger General_PotentialReformator_Marian_Consul
      WhenToTest CharacterTurnEnd

        Condition FactionType seleucid
              and I_NumberOfSettlements seleucid > 40
              and Trait ICERating > 7
              and Trait Popularis > 0
              and Attribute Influence > 2
              and Attribute Command > 2
              and Trait Consul > 0
              and Trait MarianControl < 1

      Affects Reformator 1 Chance 100
      Affects MarianControl 1 Chance 100
I then just deleted the "and Trait Popularis > 0" line. Should that be enough to modify the requirements for the Marian Reforms, or is there something else I have to do to bring it about? -M

Btw, thanks for all the help. I wouldn't have gotten nearly as far without you guys.

Someone was wondering if patricians get popularis. In my current roman campaign Scipio Asina was, to my surprise, popularis. He won a lot of battles and resided only in cities with Ceres Temples.

Wasn't Scipio Asina one of the starting FM's and a popularis at the beginning of the game. In all my Romanii campaigns I've never found a Patrician "Popularis".

Like you, I'm afraid I'm not an expert in editing these files. I think you'll need somebody like bovi, Foot, konny, MAA, etc. to give you specific advice. Sorry!

Your suggestion looks perfectly logical to me, so at a basic level I would say give it a try and see what happens. Make backup copies of your current datafiles and savegames so you could roll back in case something gets messed up.

    Good luck.
