Adding new units

Can anyone point me to an idiot-proof guide for adding new units? I know there's that EDU thread in the Scriptorium, but...... frankly I can't understand a bit of it. There's a link to the guide for Caligula, but it 404'd.

To start:
1) which files do I need to modify, and how, to add new units? Say I wanted to add an (existing) barbarian warband unit to the Greeks, or give Thrace access to one of the Macedonian/Seleucid phalanxes.
2) how do I put in hidden resources?
