is alexander total war also a expancion for Rome total war gold edition?? or only for rome total war with the patches and BI

Effectively the (SEGA) Gold Edition is R:TW and BI fully patched and packed onto a single DVD, so yes, the game should work with it.

Check your version number of each game to be sure. Not all the copies of RTW Gold came with RTW at 1.5 and BI at 1.6. Mine came with BI at 1.4, which set RTW back to 1.3 after I installed it. Was I ever surprised at that!

You can find your version number by starting each, going to Options, and you will see it the number the upper right corner of the screen.

Although for Alexander I believe all you need is RTW at 1.5.
