I'm playing my first campaign as a non catholic(russia) and was wondering what happens when you take Rome. Does a horde show up or does he reemerge or basically nothing.

When a fox kills your chickens, do you kill the pigs for seeing what happened? No you go out and hunt the fox.

Its the same... only dif is that you dont have the pope to boss you around.
Lancome, Russia is Orthodox, it ignored the Pope all the time. I believe the Horde still show up regardless.

No horde only a lonely pope (general and bodyguard). I play the Moors in my current campaign. I first had an alliance with the pope and with almost every one. I was very popular until I became to powerful and had Italians as my neighbors. You simply can't trust those pizza salesmen. I am now full controllinf all of Italy and the pope has no more cities. I have a special hunting party ready to kill him. He first showed up near Tunis a couple of times which gave me free adoptions (generals)every time I killed him. He now hangs around near Rome and I kill him occasionally to train my camel gunners

Thank you Monsieur Alphonse. Thats the answer I was looking for. So it takes a catholic faction or the human player to gift him a city to have land back. I was hoping it wasnt likle medieval 1 where he came back with stacks of armies.

Just tried this, thought that I would post it here:
I Played as Sicily in Lands to Conquer and was unable to destroy the Papacy. Like the posters above said, if you take Rome the Papacy will still exist as a unit outside of the city. If you destroy the Papal Unit another one will spawn, as another cardinal is elected Pope. I kept attacking the Papal unit each time it was spawned. When the college of cardinals got down to 2, I was unable to attack the papal unit anymore. A red X appeared when I moved my unit in to attack, which was dissapointing. I am pretty sure that I wouldn't have been able to assasinate the Pope either.
Does anyone else know how to destroy the Papacy completley, either as a catholic or non-catholic faction?
I've done this is an english campaign... I had everything, refused to give the pope any land, got excommunicated about 5 times. As a catholic faction, he cannot be destroyed. Because as soon as you get a priest/bishop above 4 piety, he will go to the college of cardinals and thus be pope. and it is possible to assassinate pope's. I did it and ended up with a 95% chance of it happening. I killed off all his family, waited for my bishops to die, and the papacy still existed. I even wiped all of his forces into nothing.

I'm not sure about this, but I think you need to make sure that no other faction has any bishops either, and the council is completely empty,to stop him coming back.
Yes that's true. The only way to stop him ever coming back is to be a Muslim or Orthodox faction and wipe out every single Catholic faction, or at least annihilate every bishop, priest and cardinal with >4 Piety.
It is funny seeing a lonely Pope on the map with no army. Usually hangs out in the mountains north of Rome. As if he's going to retake Rome with a few Jesuits...
