    Default Background script question (again)

I've been playing EB for a while now (i'm in 217BC), and I'm getting quite itchy for some real professional legionaries, meaning I want the Marian reforms. After searching the site a bit I came across the background script-thing, which I of course didn't activate. Everybody says that you have to start all over again, really .
What happens if you start activating the script now, or in a previous save game? Will the reforms and other script stuff just happen later or not at all? Or will the game get all messed up?
