AVG false positive.

Just thought I'd share this with you guys, it's pretty serious and a ton of people are affected. namely anyone who scanned and auto-healed between 9 and 10 November.

The problem was that the AVG virus scanner considered the user32.dll file a Trojan virus, and autohealed it after completing the scan. Which results in your pc not starting anymore. Fortunately, though too late for many (and yours truly), AVG caught it relatively soon and has released an update to fix the mess they caused. So do yourselves a favor, if you're an AVG user, and update immediately before even thinking about scanning your pc.

Anyway, I'm not using AVG in the foreseeable future, so does anyone have a suggestion as to a decent free virus scanner ?

The ones with a free license that I can come up with right now are are avast and antivir.

AVG is dependable, but they have been somewhat flaky this year. First a corrupt .bin file, now this.

General information: Anything in the System32 folder is best left untouched until someone knowledgeable gives the OK.

Still if your computer refuses to start you can sue AVG America style

AVG have been incredibly bad as of recent. Not picking up actual viruses, and getting false positives. It thought some files in my Hearts of Iron 2 game folder were viruses. This persisted for a month or so and then stopped for no reason.

Shame, they used to be so good. Oh well.

I second Avira. Had it for years, does the job quite well.

Does anyone know how to make it so AVG does not load on start up without going into msconfig? I want to try Avast.

Antiviruses are supposed to keep you clean of virii so they generally integrate themselves so that they are loaded as soon as the OS starts getting loaded. I doubt you'd find any other way around.
