Well, that's not entirely true, is it? I have gotten Local Hero, Scarred and Very Confident Troops traits with generals who were not in command. But yes, you're right. The conduct does make a difference. Especially if he actually fights or not, how much of the bodyguard he loses (probably the most important one) and whether he routs.
Actually I thought all the postbattle triggers had the IsGeneral condition, but I see now that some of them don't, even many, so you're right.
