Default Romans in Gaul - How to call them?

    Hi,

in my current campaign as Makedonia I have (nearly) conquered the Italian peninsula. The problem is, in several decades of war, the Romans have conquered all of Gaul. I have no Gallic factions left to replace them, and the Casse doesn't seem so appropiate to me. Also, stirring up a revolt doesn't seem to work. So I'm thinking of a faction called "Romanized Gauls", or "Gallic Romans".

How would they be called, either in Latin or in Greek?

Kelto-Romaioi? Don't know at all, but hellenized Celts are named Kelto-hellenikoi in eb :P
    Or maybe Imperium Galliarum?

FYI, the words "Gallic" and "Celtic" are related. The name "Galatian" proves this.

    Latin: Galloromani, Celtoromani

    Greek: Galloromaioi, Keltoromaioi

He's right...that's exactly what the French are today. Mostly descendants of Gauls and Romans...in northern France (except Paris of course...you can find everything there.) you notice that the people look like they may have Gallic origin, and in the south (especially Provence) you see darker, more "Latin" looking people. Of course it's not all inclusive, but for the most part this is true. I'm not so sure if the Franks were more of an ethnic or cultural invasion...probably neither, if i'm correct I think that they just became the ruling caste. Most of the French nobility came from old Frankish warriors and generals.

I think the Franks were Germans.

Good advice here. What about Imperivm Galloromanorvm? If I'm not mistaken, this means Empire (or better "Rule") of the Galloromans / the Romans in Gaul.

Imperivm Galliarvm seems good to me too, but what buggers me a bit there is that Gaul is not so thoroughly romanized yet as it was some 4 1/2 centuries later. Most of the cities there so far still have the Celtic city model / core building. The Romans have been battling the Aedui for decades, but once they were gone, and I gave the Arverni many territories in Northern Italy, this acted like a catalysator and made the Romans go on a blood rush through Gaul in no more than a few years while loosing territory to the Carthaginians in Southern Italy. It was really scary, there could nothing be done for the poor Arverni. They really had a nice empire in Gaul, even occupying eastern Hispania for decades.

Rome in the peak of her power. In the meantime, the Lusotannan conquered Tolosa, and I Mediolanum, Bononia, Roma, Syrakusai and the Baleares from the Phoinikes, Arretium and Capua are under siege. Unfortunately, the "Roman" Senate has moved to Segesta since long.

    P.S.: I want a red one.

The black ones. We are all Hellenes. Or do you mean these unthankful effete southrons? Happily dancing and cheering to salute their generous Makedonian overlords. That means, the ones who survived the measures of revenge, errh, justice, that took place in a) 271 in the massacre of Sparte, b) 270 in the massacre of Athenai, c) 219 in the massacre of Korinthos, d) 218 in the massacre of Thermon, and e) - last but not least - 217 in the Great Bloody Bloodfeast Massacre of Athenai. You might also want to hear that the Akropolis, pride of all Athenians, was severely damaged by the outrageous mob during the rebellion, and never restored, leaving its ruins as a sign to future generations.

so in other words, the Greeks are utterly destroyed.

That is very true. Say, I was wondering what the composition of a typical army of yours is like. Also, how deep your pockets are at the moment. Just curious, as I'm playing my own Makedonian campaign as well.

    Cheers,

Default AW: Romans in Gaul - How to call them?

The guys in Green are the Karthadastim, whom I recouloured and renamed Phoinikes. Phoinikes because their FMs have mostly the Qarthadastei trait and they still own Sardinia and Korsika.

My military is organized in 3 levels:

Level 1 are garrison troops. All cities are responsible for their garrison troops, meaning they must be levied there. Only exception is Bocchoris, where I can't recruit anything.

Level 2 are regional forces. My empire is divided in military districts with a district capital where the regional troops are levied. They consist normally of 4 units local levy infantry, 2 units local missile troops, and 1 unit of local horsemen. In case that there is an external threat and I need a more or less quick response, the amount is doubled, and this army gets a Misthophoros Strategos.

Level 3 are the Royal Armies. They consist of nearly two fullstacks, that means an army and a corps of reserve regiments, because they are of course Makedonian and often the way for reinforcements is long. There are four Royal Armies draining the Royal Coffers atm:
    • 1st Army of Aristoxenos Pellaios, operation area in southern Iran
    • 2nd Army of King Antiochos, operation area in Numidia
    • 3rd Army of Zaikedenthes Aphetaios, operation area in northern Iran
    • 4th Army of Sosipatros Philippeus, operation area in Italia
These armies consist besides the Somatophylakes of 1 unit Hetairoi (going to be exchanged with Kataphraktoi for the 3rd Army), 1 unit of Thessalikoi (west) or Lonchophoroi (east), 2 units Thraikioi Prodromoi (west) or Hellenikoi Prodromoi (east), 4 units of Hysteroi Pezhetairoi, 1 unit of Argyraspides, 2 units of Thorakitai, 1 unit of Peltastai Makedonikoi, 2 units of Agrianikoi Pelekuphoroi, 2 units of Thureophoroi, 1 unit of Thraikioi Peltastai, and 2 units of Toxotai Syriakoi (east) or Kretikoi (2nd Army) or Thureopherontes Toxotai (4th Army). Additionally, there are 2 units of Sphendonetai Rhodioi to replace the archers, and 2 units of Thraikioi Rhomphaiaphoroi (1st and 4th Army) or Cordinau Orca (2nd and 3rd Army) to replace the Agrianikoi. The reserve regiments are half in number, in case there is only one active regiment, they are equal in number.

Other than that I have a full stack mercenary army in the east. I consider it somewhat as a "private" army payed by royal coffers working for Makedonia. Blackwater Security if you want. Since my other military is very rigidly organized, I like to have room for experiments.

Regarding my pockets: As shallow as a puddle during dry season. During my initial imperial phase, I was rolling in cash. I had only two royal armies to support and had like 500,000 mnai. I afforded several factions to enter a war, e. g. the Armenioi against the Seleukides for some 150,000. This drained and drained when I was conquering Egypt. Normally I earn some 40,000 a turn now with all the four armies. I'm pretty much always on zero and have roleplayed taking out loans from the traders of my empire, paying them 10% interest in 4 rates even. But since two or three turns, my income has come down to only 18,000 or even 15,000 a turn. I think this is because the Armenioi betrayed me, and some of the trade routes in the Black Sea must have been really lucrative. Also, I held Carna for a while, which has rich mines, but gave it back to Saba due to roleplaying. I didn't want to take out the Phoinikes quickly, but I think maybe I should, given that they have very rich mines.

Military districts. Some may have no capital yet (white cities.) Clients are left out (white territories).

Political Situation 195BC. Shades of grey at my borders are clients (Skordiski, Augila, Palmyra, Nabatäa, Sinai, Kush, Gerrha and Maketa).

If there is an imperium Galliorum, where's Syagrius?

we need a Syagrius to preside over as it topples down, just like the real Syagrius was toppled by Clovis.

    just my 2 cents.

EDIT: I'm referring to the 5th century breakaway kingdom, not the 3rd century empire..
