    Post Next Up: The Cello

What is it with cellos getting used in pop music? First I hear Tricky's new track, Cross to Bear, and practically the entire instrumentation is the cello. It's good, really good, but who knew about the funky power of the cello?

Then I hear this new guy, Ben Sollee, whose entire act revolves around the bull fiddle. Weird. Good music, but weird.

Is the cello finding its place in modern pop music, or am I just reading too much into a couple of recent acts?

    -edit-

Dang it, I meant to post this in the Frontroom, not the Back. Could somebody help a brutha out?

With a name like that you would say so.

The cello is quite beautiful. I've noticed the same thing Lemur. There is also a rock song (name slips my mind at the moment) that begins with violin etc. as well. Lots of rap use Indian beats and instruments as well.

It's like modern aged music humanism or something.

The Beatles started it IIRC. The cello's been used a lot in pop culture.

Thumbs up Re: Next Up: The Cello

Thanks for sharing this. I heard the tail-end of this on XM radio and didn't get the name of the artist. Now I know what I want for Christmas.

Sollee. I just listened to cuts from that Tricky cd, and the only one I really like is Cross To Bear.

A cello was an integral part of the late, great Harry Chapin's band. A very cool instrument.
