What on earth is a SAT? Posters from all over the world seem to know what it is, except me...

Scholastic Aptitude Test. It's the basic tool used by college admissions offices to judge your worthiness. It's not the sole factor (class grades, extracurricular activities, interviews, etc also are factored in), but a high score on the SAT always helps.

Kinda like the UKCAT and BMAT that I'll have to take next year then, but I wont get points for putting my name

1474

(with the 1600 points sistem. I didn't had to make an essay though, it was 800 poins for language and 800 for math)

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
I remember back in the day when I contemplated going off to an American university to further my education. That, of course, entailed taking the SATS (the old ones, ex 1600). Looked at a couple of demo papers, just so I knew what I was in for. Did the test, with mucho staring at the ceiling. Got 800 verbal, 720 maths (which perplexed me - I'm good at maths, or at least - I was at the time, couldn't integrate by parts now, if my life depended on it).
SAT2s were similar - the hard part was the train journey there. That, and not getting overly enthusiastic in the essay - I got a question about whether or not 'might makes right' or something. Having read The Prince cover to cover on the way. Maths, Chem and Writing, if I recall. Can't remember the specifics, but I did get 800 in the maths section though, boo yah! I think the average was 760...

Thing I liked about the SATs, (apart from how ridiculously basic they were), is that they're graded on the basis of everyone who takes it. That is, unlike A-levels, they should be a little more resistant to 'grade-inflation'. Unless you get a particularly dud year, of course. (Which might explain my marks...)

Hmm.......you can't get points in the ones, ie a score of 1474 is not possible, only 1470 or 1480, but nothing in between....

Where is the logic in penalising students for getting a question wrong? You lose 1/2 a mark or something per incorrect answer and I think I tried to answer every question on mine, even when I was only half-certain.
I haven't read the rest of the thread (yet).

But I can think of a good reason generally. With multiple choice it would discourage guessing (where you could pick up another 1/4 or so of the marks).

In specific cases it is probably a very good idea to have negative marking. Where-ever mistakes costs lives so abseiling, medicine, flying would all be good exams to have negative marking.

Gah! The more I hear about this test the less I like it...why not make it out of 160 instead of giving you 10 "points" per mark...

We have some insanely high scores on this board... way above the national average

I got a 1790/2400 the first time. It's funny because I studied and prepared a lot for the exam.

I took it again and got a 1930/2400 with no studying or preparation... go figure. Reading killed me. I think I got a 570 or something. I scored well in math with a 720 and writing was ok with a 640.

I had some really bad experiences with my SAT testing......

About 6 months of studying, I took it my first time and got 2300 (the new one that is)

After about another 5 months, I took it again and only got 2340.......writing killed me both time since I got full marks (800) in both math and verbal.....

I hope the first bit is sarcasm because with those scores you basically could/can attend any university that you like.

I know my scores are insanely high, but you simply don't know how many hours I've spent studying for my second test to only see it go up 40 points......

As for my score, its kinda meh in my school since it is highly competetive and there are quite a few 2380s among my friends.....

I don’t remember my exact score but it was decent even thought I took a 10 minute break during the writing portion to throw-up. They usually don’t let you out and back in but it was a special circumstance. I thought the teachers aid that was told to follow me into the restroom (I guess to make sure I didn’t hide the answers in the porcelain bus) was going to hurl listing to me yack.

A touch of the flu and my mom demanding that I eat a big, healthy breakfast did me no good.

Well, I go to a pretty good public high school in Maryland. As for universities, I am applying at the moment. I applied to Yale for Early Action and for regular decision, are basically applying to most of the ivies

I wish you luck in college, my friend. If you are this stressed out over an SAT score as high as yours you will be pulling hair out at place like Yale.

Best of luck.

Well, not necessarily. The PSAT doesn't have the essay and the writing portion is significantly shorter. Also, there is more of an endurance problem with the real SAT since it takes alot longer.

The second time I took it, the temp was like 95°F+ outside. Of course, my school doesn't have air conditioning and of course, my room had to be in the foreign language wing, which was the hottest in the school. (The rooms are like greenhouses) So, the inside temp was more like 105°F+. Basically, by the end of the second section, I was sweating like hell. I'd go to the bathroom to wash my face, but then sat down and within 30 secs, was sweating like hell again. Absolute torture.....

As for your friend.......I hate her......I only got like 223 or something like that.....
