    Question 'Tactics'-type games?

As the topic implies, I've kinda been in the mood to play a Final Fantasy Tactics type game lately.

    However...

All of my consoles are currently all packed away and I don't really want to get them out, nor do I really have the space for them right now.

    So...

I was wondering if anyone knew of anything like FF:T on the PC? I gather there's this Silent Storm series, might try that out. In particular I was hoping that maybe there was some free or open source type deal. The last thing I played was Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis for GBA, that was reasonably fun and in line with what I'm kinda looking for. Unfortunately it would seem that there really isn't much out there, but my Google-fu could be weak.

Fire Emblem is probably one of the best GBA games I have ever played, and is exactly what you are looking for. Advanced wars is pretty good too.

As for comp games, I play Rome

They envy us because we are mortal, because any moment might be our last.

Well... I'd second fire Emblem, and also another good tactics game, but hard to find is the romance of the three kingdoms which incorporates Tactics with say EU and HoI type world maps.

I love strategy RPGs. I can name loads on various consoles, and I'm struggling to name any at all on the PC. Right from my early days of gaming SRPG has been one of the few genres I consider to be virtually console exclusive. The limited titles I can name on the PC bear little resemblence to games like FF:T or Tactics Ogre.

There is the HoMM series. You have your heroes and build them up via XP from combat. You explore a map, get equipment, learn skills. That's it for the RPG side; it's much more a turn-based PC strategy game. If you want to look at HoMM try downloading a demo of HoMM5.

AFAIK (I haven't played it) Fallout: Tactics is a SRPG.

Fantasy Wars is quite close. Your units all gain XP and that's used to get them abilities. It's a turnbased hex strategy game in ye olde style with current day graphics and interface. I can recommend it - provided you can take a difficulty level which isn't afraid to wipe you out.

Advance Wars definitely isn't a SRPG. It's a brilliant series of turn-based strategy games; no RPG element involved.

Given Wesnoth a look lately? It's probably not everything you're looking for, but it is free and open-source. They story is only as good as the campaign's creator and character development is limited to leveling up and branching class evolution- but hey.... its free!

Also, dust off your Wii and play the GC classic, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. That game is teh awesome.

Yup, Wesnoth is a great game. It's a free, open source, hex-based, strategy game with a decent AI, tons of single-player contant and multiplayer support. What more could you want?

Silent Storm is fun if you like linear storylines.

I never got on with Wesnoth tbh.

Consoles are what it's at. Only know of Silent Storm and Fallout Tactics, both awesome. If your GBA is still working, the Advance War games are great.

Steel Panthers? Fairly fun, free, hex-based WWII tactics game. With tanks and planes and artillery and foot sloggers. The graphics aren't much, but I enjoy it.

It's a bit old, but a great strategy RPG, Uncharted Waters 2. Graphics even for the time were crap, but the game is very deep and complex.

How about just Jagged Alliance 2?

The game is classic by any standards.

    ~Another Wesnoth Fan~

Failing that, its time you went and got a Gameboy or Genesis emulator. The genesis has a game called Shining Force which is great for some retro style fun in FF tactics style.
