    Default Satres

Who is this 'Satres' character that pops up in the Alps around 248 BC? He has a big-ass, silver chevron army of Celtic spearmen and Neitos, but his image is one of a Greek family member. I saw him for two turns, and then he disappeared.

Who is he, what is he there for, and what happened?

His army went into a wooded area and hid themselves. Sending a couple of spies should reveal his hidden army.

BTW, Satres is not the only general with a huge stack full of silver chevron troops in that area. Rhaetia, Noricae, Mrogbonna, and Lugouw all have full, highly experienced garrisons and one, two and even three extra stacks of veterans in their territory. Eburonum, in the territory of Mrogbonna, has a fullstack town garrison in addition to three fullstack armies, one of which has a 10-star general. All of the units in the 4 stacks defending Eburunum have at least one silver chevron.

Going against them is pure suicide, especially since the armies led by generals respawn. In my current Romani campaign, I have about 120 territories, but I have yet to touch the ones I was talking about in the beginning of the post. I am leaving those territories to act as meat grinders of the gargantuan Sweboz army - second largest and best in my campaign, right after mine.

Indeed, I would heartily follow Paullus' recommendation. My only and last experience with these men was during a Romani campaign when I sent a huge stack of Camillan legionaries only to be defeated in the end. I didn't know they could respawn, but that is another reason why you should leave them alone, and they generally won't harm you if you don't enter their territories. Let the AI get killed by them at their whims.

It don't matter to me... I'm playing Lusotan right now, and I enjoy things that curtail Romani expansion. Lol.

But one more question... Why the Greek picture?

We cannot control the portraits that are assigned to eleutheroi beyond setting the culture for them. We have chosen Greek as that is the culture most prevalent in our map, so that it clashes in the least amount of instances.

I ran into those stacks around Euborum in my last Getai campaign when I needed Euborum for my VC's.

It was brutal. After taking out 2 of the stacks, and taking huge losses in the process, I got obliterated by the last one, my general survived with 2 bodyguards. So I raise an entirely new army of some of the best troops I could get, with no levies, and a few nobles, and still got wiped out.

Oh... when I play the Aedui, or Avernii (the Celtic Barbarians), I often see a huge stack of siver chevrons eleutheroi wandering in the south of my place, but I prefer not to disturb them with my "AMINO!!! (I remember amino acids when hear them)" barbarians. I just want to meet them with my amassed phalanx with! Or Perhaps they will be auto-disbanded if they left untoched in 100++ years? When I play Romani or Makedonian campaign I never saw them when I take over the Alps...

i think this question remains unanswered, although you guys have nicely answered on to 'why' he is there. i am simply curious myself, what the historical basis is for this particular general... it seems to me it is likely a name so he has a name, sort of like the Sweboz Family Members, ect. who are not documented or named in oral tradition for 280BC. but if that is not the case and he is a historical name, all the more interesting!

It was chosen at random from the list of Eleutheroi names by Eminos, who made the defender script.

In EB phalanxes "pwn" everything from the front. Ironically, only heavy cavalry is good against EB phalanxes, since they are the only ones who can get through all of those pikes without being instantly obliterated. Kind of funny and ahistorical, but nonetheless true.

Oh? I find Heavy Cavalry pushes back the phalanx rather than penetrating it.

As for these armies, one of them hangs around north of Pella, but I smashed it up with a combined arms army of Phalangites, Agraines, Thessalians and Cretan archers.... I wasn't arsed going around to another pass.....

I've managed to conquer 2 of those provinces before. It was hard as hell and i needed at least 2 legions - 1 to tie down the city and the other to fight the silver mega army. I was lucky and my army was not only somewhat experienced w/ excellent general but also had the super high ground. and some scorpions (I think that I killed the general, if not some of his best troops that way). Just my 2 cents on how i did it.

Just don't create a fort in their territory! If they attack that then you'll get a CTD next turn due to some problem with the script re-positioning the defending stack. I thought I had an easy run to the province's city by distracting Satres with a pointless fort seige against some low-level roustabouts while I went for the gold, but unfortunately no luck...

On the other hand, if you're playing as Romani and have a few decades to kill while waiting for the Marian reforms to kick it, Satres et al are a great way to "exercise/condense/entertain" your current lot of Polybian veterans, and might provide a welcome (and repeated) variation from whatever frontier skirmishes you might currently be fighting to maintain your empire...

I was hoping Satres was a historical character, kicking ass all over the map. It would be a nice variation from all the tales of the Celts being run over by everyone during this historical period.

Oh, well. I guess I can only rewrite history in EB...

I conquered the world with Epeiros, the last things I did was conquering the massive rebel armies. I made a special army for this which proved succesful, still, it's a pain to fight all those battles.

With my new Romani campaign I hurried to Iuvavum before the rebels were triggered, sadly, in the future all those other cities have to be captured too, especially Eburonum. It's always sad to see how the Sweboz waste all their armies trying to conquer Eburonum.

Does anyone else bribe these guys?
In my Getai campaign, I bribed the Lugo province defender and used his (1/2) stack of veterans to capture the town. . . and the town south of him. . . and Ak-Ink. . . and to defeat a Roman fullstack coming to attack Ak-Ink (they retreated into Satres' province ). . .

You dont need elites to kill Satres, once I made a stack of 1 celtic mercenary general, 10 units of gaeroas (celtic spearmen) and 9 units of celtic slingers. Positioned the spearmen on a slope in guard mode, waited until most of enemy forces were engaged, wheeled slingers around the flanks, then targeted Satres unit first and all the rest after he was killed. Surprisingly I suffered less than 50% casualties.
