Untimely Crash- A RAM Problem?

Greetings Europa Barbarorum!

I am Novellus, and I am new to the Forums. However, I have followed the Europa Barbarorum forums for quite some time, seeing very intelligent discussions and interesting points made. And at this point, I'm sure that the forums have had several questions about things such as RAM and graphics cards, which is where I had a slight problem...

I was happily playing as Epieros on VH/VH in the campaign mode. After conquering two of the provinces and destroying several Roman armies, I held the city of Rome under siege with a sizeable force. Then it happened...the computer crashed. The program ended and the computer shut down and wouldn't turn on again. The computer had to be sent in for some repairs. There were a few possiblities thrown out there such as a virus or something. But most likely it is a problem with the 2Gbs of RAM I had installed a month ago. I checked the power supply. It still worked, but the light flashed like the blinker for a car. I'm wondering if it was the RAM and if it went bad. It's strange since I had been playing Europa Barbarorum 1.0 for months without incident. So if there was a bug in the game itself, there may already be a patch out that addressed the problem that I may have overlooked. But the concern is, could Europa Barbarorum have put too much stress on the RAM to possibly damage it?

Nope, I had 2 Gb RAM now, but I play the 0.7 and above with 1 Gb for a long time without any incidents... ( I upgrade my RAM, buying new 2 Gb card, and give my old 1 Gb DDR2 for my friend) no problem... even with my old 1 Gb RAM that now lies on another computer...

Maybe you should check your power supply... It damages components if it has over/underpotential. Maybe some virus coupled with evil spyware... duplicate your process entirely... crippling out your RAM...
EB is slow, but it was safe...

I have 2GB of RAM and I can alt-tab, use Firefox + Office, and still play it smoothly on both the campaign and battle maps with up to 10.000 fellows fighting.

Destroying your RAM isn't something we're able to do, even if we tried. Seems to me that you've just happened to get a hardware failure while playing EB, and that it probably would have happened anyway. However, EB taxes your system somewhat and could mean that any instability in your chip which had lain dormant may surface.

Personally I had to reduce the speed of the RAM in the BIOS (the first screen that's shown when you turn on the computer), but then again my computer would start without problems after each crash caused by it. If you want to make sure you have good chips, you can download Memtest from memtest.org and run that overnight. If it doesn't find any errors during that time, your RAM is fine.

Oh, and about fearing the moderators, you won't have any kind of trouble with us as long as your posts are well-meaning. I mostly move posts if they're hindering the purpose of the thread. Your post being in the wrong forum means it gets moved, but there is no ill will.

Thank you for the responses. It was a pretty unusual thing that happened, especially since it had been working fine for the past several months. On a positive note, I was due for a computer upgrade anyway, especially since EB 1.2 came out recently.

The powers supply was very strange. I had thought it was broken earlier and I searched through some of the computer manuals. It said that if my power supply was flashing like a car blinker, the cause could have been faulty memory or a broken power supply. After buying a new power supply, the other one magically sprang back to life though the computer still didn't operate correctly. So I was just wondering if the RAM could have been damaged with the powerful EB game or something, which everyone on the thread believes is not the case.

I'm due for a new computer anyway, so the updated technology would probably stop future problems. Again, thank you all.

You should probably run Memtest anyway on both systems, for good measure.
