Thread: Spartan Agoge

    Default Spartan Agoge

Does anyone know which traits trigger a "succesfull" training in the agoge?. More than often the agoge corrupts my proud youth, making them nothing but mediocre governors. It seems that i get better FM´s by avoiding the agoge. Can someone specify?

If your fella is optimistic, sharp and vigorous, he will have a higher possibility of even joining the Krypteia, which means that he excelled in the Agoge. But you can look this up somewhere in the FAQ, me thinks.

most young men go under the agoge. they have to stay in sparte and must not leave till its completet (when they are 20)... or if they go under the krypteia, wich is even better, they have to stay in the province of sparte, but not in the city itself.

if they leave too early, they have failed and stay of course loosers for the rest of their lives ;-)

I only send Spartans to the agoge. Athenians turn out to be retards especially if they go to it.

Yea, that's usually what I do. I turn Sparte into my military training centre and only send spartans to get trained there. In Athens I build up academies and give my athenians a good education....

You want to build up the education facilities in Sparta too. That way you start getting massively useful FMs.

I usually build even an Akademia in Sparte, mainly for the puppet governors I install there. They get good traits, plus my youngsters can undergo the Agoge there.

Hm in my Mak campaign I sent the FMs first to Sparte and then 2 years to Athens, where I had great schools of learning.

I just sent my Dull/Charismatic/Langourous Demetrias Aergedes to Sparta for some Agoge-training. Hopefully, he will not turn out to be a complete idiot...

Hmmm, you better had not. You see, Dull and Languorous characters are not the best candidates. You'll just ruin him. Look at his traits rather and send him over to a city with a good school of he's bookish or something like that. If not, let him go out on campaign or govern a city.

That's the only trait I ever got from the agoge... no matter who I sent to Sparte, they all came back with that trait

sometimes i get Excelled in the Agoge, or he joins some secret society. I once got one guy who joined like the secret police, and had to go around Lakeonia looking for rebels and runaway slaves or something, and he became my very greatest general of all time. My Spartans always become top warriors. athenians and rhodesians are... better left on their homeland. I do have a Cretan who can dice out the pain, but hes quite well... hes a cretin :P

in my experience Spartans do very well in the Agoge, other races, especially Athenians turn into complete arseholes with the agoge.

I once sent an Athenian (Doros son of Chremonides) to the agoge just for kicks. He got into the krypteia and became an uber-general, with 5 stars before he ever saw any combat. Unfortunately, I got him and another FM killed in a stupid defense against a Bithnian sally.

Could you please prove how exactly that happened. Just the traits would be fine.

He died a long time ago, so it's difficult to remember.

He had versions of those 3 command traits, _ tactician, _ leader, understanding of tactics (correct me if those aren't right), and he got 2 command from the tactician because he was advanced in that trait. He also had an ancilliary that raised his command by 1 when attacking, so that woud make 5.

I see. It's just that it's quite rare to see any generals with more than 4 command stars, especially for me who gets characters with the "Hypermethyskos" trait that lowers command

I didn't know that schools affected FM's after their coming of age. I thought it simply made the city as a whole run better and new FM's smarter. On the same note, does anyone know if schools actually improve diplomats (or any agents for that matter)?

Yes, diplomats start out as "freshly recruited", but will gain a "trained" trait (+1 influence, and IIRC movement and security bonuses as well) if they stay in a town with an academy or better for a few turns. They will also gain this trait if they conduct negotiations, though.

I am not sure about spies and assassins. As far as I know, they gain their "trained" trait and ancillaries through the market line of buildings.
