Thread: Do you ever worry about posting your opinions on the internet?

Default Do you ever worry about posting your opinions on the internet?

The more you post, the bigger the chances are that more people will see your account. With easy access to ip tracing websites and google earth, I think we're exposing our privacy away. And with the constant threat of terrorism, I'm sure government agencies are looking all over the internet to find forumers that could be potentially dangerous in their opinion. And it's not just government agencies. I start to watch out for what I post lest I attract people I don't want to attract.

I always figured im not exciting enough for anyone to bother tracing... not extreme enough for any goverment interest... too old now for any paedophile interest... probably not annoying enough for some crazed conservative member to hunt down.... so no not really, if my opinions were very extreme (terrorism supporting) i might...

If I lived in England or Scandinavia I would probably be more cautious, but in the neds, nah.

Nah - I've always been willing to have my beliefs out there. The biggest problem is that I sometimes have considered a career in politics, which could potentially be bad if my opponets have access to google

Yes sometimes I worry, in 20 year's time when the Orgah has grown to become the worlds source for news and opinions. My highly cynical and slghtly cruel views could severely hamper my run for the Presidency of the United States of Mexico. But until then it.

    Not to worried ...
I normally use my work PC when on these boards. I am either in my company's network or via someone else's (VPN).

I have a developer role in StatoilHydro's enterprise systems. If I am a terrorist, they would already be in serious trouble.
I have frequent phone calls from Iran to my cell, during work hours and outside work hours and even during weekends (something to do with Iran working on Sundays) and I could for all i know be monitored.
I am not too worried, because I don't have a guilty conscience. I am clean. I have not exposed national or business secrets on the net and I am not involved in any illegal activities.

I worry a little about you younger guys who write about your drug usage and other personal information. Twenty years from now, when you're looking toward that big promotion to VP in charge of Widgets, such words, archived for decades by Google and Yahoo Spiders, might require explanation, or take you out of the running altogether.

Not too much, I blabber about myself just as much when I meet someone nice in a shop or so, not usually but if we're talking anyway I will lay out half my life in front of them. I don't know why but what's bad about that? If someone doesn't like my views or so they won't like them anyway, whether I tell them or not, the difference is just whether I am honest or not. And I am, the governments of this world are most likely not interested in my opinion anyway though sometimes I wish they would actually read it and think about it.

What you should worry about though, is what you make public on facebook.

I am a Landlord and have an apartment that people can lease. I have a few bylaws that I want people to follow and one of them is no smoking inside. I am not discriminating against smokers, but I don't let out to untrustworthy people.
I usually check out the people interested in the apartment and if they tell me they never party and are non-smokers and I find their public facebook profile full of pictures of parties and the person with a cigarette in the mouth, I am inclined to think that I have been lied to.

Heh.. the other day I had a guy wanting the apartment. He said he played a little guitar. Checking his facebook profile I discovered that he was in a rock band.
    Needles to say ...

Also... be careful using your full name on the Internet.
A soon to be mother went from first on my list to second based on something she wrote on a blog a few years back using her full name.
People making decisions might have candidates that are equal and base their choice on gut feelings and impressions. It could be a minor thing that shifts the choice in favour of the other guy.

Do I worry? How may I put this ...

Black is white! Night is day! Mickey Mouse makes me sexually aroused! I vote for Nader in every election, whether he's running or not! Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a communist stooge! Celine Dion is the greatest artist of our generation! When I watch "2 girls 1 cup" I get sleepy!

If I can think of any other offensive opinions to give, I'll come back and voice them.

    Freudian slip?

As per the OP, I'm very careful about what I divulge about myself on the internet, both here and on Facebook. I'm a naturally private person IRL anyway, not sharing much about myself unless I know I can trust you. This doubly extends to the internet.

Not that I'm worried since I don't do anything that could be considered harmful to future prospects, but I'm just careful out of habit.

Backroom posts are off limits to google (as far as I can tell). I try to only post my more bizarre insight into locked forums like this one. I suspect that internet privacy won't be much of an issue when people realize consequences in 10 or 15 years. People will self-censor - I know I do - but strange quirks will become so widespread that it won't be much of a deal. Eventually I think everyone's naked body and experiences will be freely viewable to everyone else. I don't really believe in privacy because I don't really beleive that when people see the darkness in everyone it will really matter. I am taken aback at peoples sensitivity and sense of privacy when the reality is that it is dying - and it should. I want to know everything at all times - what you think, what you do, where you are.

Every one of you. Just because I think free information is great.

Look at sexual mores and how they have degenerated due to light being shed on them. Serious mistakes will have to be forgiven or else nobody will be promoted or allowed to do sensitive work.

For example - type "tuffstuffmcgruff" into google and tell me what you've found.

I'd worry more about posting information on the web if it weren't for that fact that most people do it. Sigurd speaks the truth though, you have to set your facebook status to private otherwise any potential employer/landlord is going to check up on you.

ps: google "Sasaki Kojiro" and see what it gets you.

Reminds me of the Harvey Birdman episode.

Reducto: Every conversation is scanned for key words. Here, give me your phone, I'll show you.
    Harvey: Umm...
Reducto: [speaks into the phone] Hello. Mail bomb.
    Harvey: Uh, heh... um...
    Reducto: Assassination.
Harvey: Hey, can I have that back? I just remembered...
    Reducto: Fertilizer.
Harvey: ...I'm almost out of minutes.
Reducto: Same-sex marriages. Patagonia. Nader for President.
Harvey: See, nothing happened. Nobody's monitoring these things!
Phil: [watching them on the security camera] Huh, I always took Reducto for a libertarian.

Not too much right now, but I don't think that anything that I've posted are that far off from what you would get if you met me and talked with me for half an hour or so

I seriously doubt the possibility of tracking anything of such magnitude. I don't mean Org, but internet in general. Millions of forums, millions of posts every day, millions blogs, articles etc... Using software to do it is impossible - what's it gonna track? Keywords? Like some software somewhere activates whenever I write Fidel Castro, Vladimir Putin, Hugo Chavez, Saddam Husein, Osama Bin Laden, George Bush, Talibans, Afghanistan, Iraq?

No to mention the possible different spellings of names in various languages and spelling mistakes of course.

Aside from all that, I seriously doubt that my opinions would interest somebody who holds that much power. Sarmatian today spent 6 hours on the internet - for one hour he was involved in discussion about world politics, history, geography, tourism, films, music, computer games etc, etc... and he spent the other 5 on viewing various pornographic content

I never made any posts that were threatening. But I have made a lot of political posts, which might attract some extreme people. I really wouldn't mind if it was just that, but I have made too much jokes that have made some forumers type real angry messages. It's times like that when I start to think about that guy in Russia who searched and intercepted the spammer that was annoying him. I don't spam by the way.

I'm not racist and I never made any racist posts either.

    Probably.

Looking at his concert pictures a little guitar playing is more like a lot of guitar playing, and probably loud guitar playing too.
If it had been a little playing on an acoustic guitar, I might have not considered it to be a potential problem.

It's a house people live there, I find checking out people in such a way rather intrusive, I can understand it but meh. Here it's common ground not to make too much noise after 10.

    I understand your point.

The main point by checking people's background is to see if they are able to pay their rent. Secondary is to check their story.
If I find out that they have had economic problems before, they fall to the bottom of the list or out of the list altogether.
When I show candidates the apartment they usually tell a story about themselves. I have heard many sob stories of broken homes etc. All though I feel for them, I am reluctant to house angry kids or former relationships in conflict.
But there is a story and if I can see a potential candidate, I usually check this story.
I have to be able to chose the right candidate and I need Intel to make the right choice. If I feel they have lied or been creative in their story, I lose my trust in them. It is better to be honest from the start.

They guy who got the apartment was forthright from the start.
He is a smoker and admitted as much. I checked with his former Landlords, and they said that this guy don't smoke indoors. He is also wealthy (checked his tax records) and owns a farm and some land. Apparently his grandmother is currently living on this farm and he will not sell it or make a living on it as long as she lives.

Things you get from typing in CountArach (No spaces) into google - Note that everything here is mine:
5 options to view my profile on various forums.
    2 chess games
2 posts from an Australian politics forum - 1 by me and 1 about me
1 thread wishing me a happy birthday.

    Nothing too incriminating...

Now typing in my real name you get nothing about me, but disturbingly you get a link to a guy on facebook whose picture has him drinking a beer, clearly already drunk... and it isn't me...

    Also a Scientologist link.
