Try a right click and then Properties on one of your icons for starting Medieval2. That should identify the directory that M2TW is installed in. Within that directory there should be a directory named "tgas" (which is short for Targa files, named for early frame buffer display boards).

There are lots of available viewing software tools if you only have the vanilla MS picture viewer. I highly recommend Faststone from faststone.org. Be sure to go to the .org address, there are campers on the .com iteration. Might be rebels.

What if you don't find any tga folder there, after having taken screenshots during a battle?

The file names used are very simple. They are consecutively numbered with 4 digits followed by .tga. The result is nnnn.tga

Try using search on the drive where M2TW is installed for: 0001.tga

BTW, what is the directory structure that your M2TW is using?

You could mouse sweep the results of the properties line I mentioned before and Ctrl-C the highlighted line that has your installation directory. Then Ctrl-V that into a response so we could see what we are dealing with. I do find this mysterious.

    Tried the tga search-no result.

The screenshot is being taken , but with the normal print screen feature of the computer ie I can get one screenshot ingame which I can paste from the clipboard after quitting a campaign or custom battle. No mutiple screenshots-only the last one taken.

    Now it gets more interesting.

Going to have to speculate here. I do not wish to dominate this discussion so if someone else wishes to propose a solution, have at it.

I am running multiple copies of the program on various family computers for myself and my kids. We have vanilla versions, Kingdoms, and Gold. All of these are on XP boxes. All work as I have explained. All correctly.

I am wondering if you have a screen capture program running. Something that allows you to grab screen shots in applications that make it difficult to do so. Something that is grabbing your normal PrtScrn key and has remapped it to their own use. Perhaps?

Also, and here I need a bit of help from someone else who has noticed, I am reminded that after an installation you do not have a Save folder until you actually save a game. I wonder if the "tgas" folder is the same? Has anyone noticed this? All of our systems have had screen shots made and they all have the tgas folder. I have never looked on an clean install for that one folder.

If you have had a remapped key for this other app, you will never have actually told M2TW to save a screen shot and thus have no TGAs folder.

Check in M2TW Options - Keyboard Settings - Misc. On mine, the bottom entry is "Grab Screenshot" and it is set to PrtScr. Is yours set otherwise? Maybe try to set it to something else temporarily. Be sure that you are not creating a conflict with some other key you use.

Are you using some form of fancy keyboard? Or keyboard mapping software?

Another thought concerns your OS. Are you using XP or Vista? Perhaps you are having a UAC issue with the directory being made by M2TW on the fly?

What happens if you actually make the TGAS directory manually? Go into C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War and make the directory "tgas". Try screen shots at that point. BTW, the screen shots work in Campaign mode or in Battle mode, so you don't have to get into a battle to see if this is going to work.

On reading this over, I would be sure to try making the Directory manually.

    Anyone else?

Wow. Thanks for all the thoughts, TechStrider!

I thought about making my own TGA folder but I wasn t sure.

The screencapture program maybe a good way to go. I do have at the moment. I'll check it out.

I just checked the Saves folder in the SEGA/M2TW/ folder-it's empty. Shouldn t it have my current game saved in it? And yet the game is saving...

The options screen shows "printscreen" for grab a screenshot.

    I'm on Vista Home Basic.

I'll try making a tga folder, though Vista may not like it.

    Thanks.

OK just tried the manual creation of the tga folder. Took screenshot-it was empty.

    Vista...
Had problems finding the tgas folder too.
(was looking for it cause I wanted to post pics of my campaign here)

Start>Computer>(C:)>Program Files>Sega>MIITW> nothing. no tgas folder...

Haven't found out how to 'unhide' files, but I found a way a round it.
Downloaded Irfanview (free BTW), which was recommended by other members, to be able to view screenshots, convert .tga to .jpeg (and do so by bulk), among other things (that I'm not aware of)
I only use irfanview only to convert to jpeg...
    try google/wiki it

    Other Org members approval:
    https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showt...ight=irfanview
    https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showt...ight=irfanview
    Once installed...
    To simply view screenshots:
Open program > Open > Browse: (C:)->Program Files->Sega->MIITW->tgas (it's there unhidden!)... select screenshot >click open

    To convert .tgas to .jpeg:
Open the program > File > Batch Conversion/Rename...
    > Look in: (C:)->Program Files->Sega->MIITW->tgas
then select photo/s, Add, Browse (for output directory)...
    Click Start Batch

Irfanview is a great tool-I have it to convert files to various image formats. How do you use it to take screenshots?

OK I've found the screenshots and the saves. I needed to search hidden files for one called Default in the C:Users folder. Finally it ends up in Virtual Store where there s a whole set of Program Files again with all the programs in it.The saves and Screenshots are in M2TW , in there.(????!!!!!????)

Thanks for all the advice and direction pointing.
