I really need to read up on Roman history . I was thinking of picking up De Bello Gallico by Julius Caesar. Any other recommendations.

There's nothing I would recommend more, than Caesars Commentariorum Belli Gallici for the start. Very exciting, very well-written (AND you have the Link to EB, very soon he writes about balearic slingers and cretan archers ^^). I'd also recommend De Bello Civili after that (which unfortunately is not complete extant).
