I really need to read up on Roman history . I was thinking of picking up De Bello Gallico by Julius Caesar. Any other recommendations.

There's nothing I would recommend more, than Caesars Commentariorum Belli Gallici for the start. Very exciting, very well-written (AND you have the Link to EB, very soon he writes about balearic slingers and cretan archers ^^). I'd also recommend De Bello Civili after that (which unfortunately is not complete extant).

No point. After you became a Roman citizin there was no taxes at all but you had to fight in the army. That means there is no real point in trying to stay historical in that sense.

I thought it was just general knowledge. I learnt it off a member here called Quintus Sertorius. He reads A LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT of history. In any matter the game doesn't represent Roman taxes properly anyway.

I just did a bit of research. There were will taxes, slave taxes, and ect but no actual head tax on any roman citizen. I never knew that.

It's amazing what you can find when you search. This is why I think we can't realitically simulate taxes, likewise we can't simulate population because of training taking away from the whole population, not just the strong male section.

Late game im sure we can set the Italia taxes on "low" and tax the crap (crap tax? ) out of the provinces.

Of course but by late game I'm sure with this tight micro managing that the game will become really fun because of civil wars. But yeah the money will start rolling in then.

Its true, there were no taxes but each citizen had to serve 10 years minimum of military service which is basically one campaign...say serving all of the march through Germania.

It because there is nothing to do really for anyone that only Everyone and Navarros has taken the saves. People are waiting on the Legions to mobolize and choise of Tribunes for the legions.

Yeah, until/if I got mobilize for Cotta's legion I want to stay in Roma where there's a school. I would guess more people will start taking the save once we start getting more people into and above the Legatus rank.

Once read that the EB modders actually made Rome that way. Rome was historically a faction that where birth didnt matter as much as the rest of the world back then. Still mattered, but not where in Parthia since you were related to the king you were guaranteed a post somewhere. So Rome gets very very few male babies if any.

Ya but if you have a baby in Rome back then he wasnt automatically going to be a consul like you were, theres a better chance though. The game simulates that by giving you adoption choices, not lineage.

I would have said most ancient civilisations would choose their next king/equivalent through strength rather than birth right. People weren't that patient.
