My sentiment exactly. Railroading is the perfect opposite of roleplaying, and it's no fun, nor is it even historically faithful either for that matter. We're not given the exact same situations that the Romans were in history, so doing what they did simply because that's what they did doesn't make much sense. It's better to play it in a way you think your avatar would act in the situation the game does throw you in. That's what roleplaying is all about, after all.
