Hi, dose anyone know what's the maximum unit size for infantry? I am looking for a real epic battle.
thanks.
Hi, dose anyone know what's the maximum unit size for infantry? I am looking for a real epic battle.
thanks.
In this game I think as it is unfinished and the screenshots only show certain units it is still very much up in the air.
However I will say MTW 1 had 100 men in some units, while rome and mtw2 had more like 60-80, and I believe 60-80 is what you are looking at for the most part.
So assuming your army can have 16 units as before, all with 80 guys, that's 1280 guys, so around 1300-1400 guys against 1300-1400 guys will probably be a full stack against full stack (which happen a good chunk of time.)
Of course if alliances work this time, and you have two armies, it wasn't uncommon in rome and mtw2 to get around 2000 vs 2000 guy battles going on. Anything beyond 5000 guys though would probably be a custom battle or very rare scenario.
Just my two cents.
In Medieval 2 the max number of units per stack is actually 20, not 16, and the max unit size is 150 on 'huge' setting. That makes 3000 maximum per side, so 1 vs 1 would be 6000 men.
In Empire we can expect to see the unit sizes stay the same or increase, so I would say 150 is most likely, and anywhere up to 200 is at least possible.
CA have, however, stated that they are not aiming to increase on the 10,000 men per battle limit so I wouldn't expect to see more than 150.
Hope that helps.

Erm what? Rome infantry *or any unit* could have up to 242 men including officers on huge. I haven't tested it but I assume it's the same in M2TW since it's the same engine.
I shouldn't have to live in a world where all the good points are horrible ones.
Is he hurt? Everybody asks that. Nobody ever says, 'What a mess! I hope the doctor is not emotionally harmed by having to deal with it.'
I tested it, and 150 is the max for huge unless you edit files. It must not be the same as it is for Rome.

I don't know if any in vanilla rome were that big *maybe the pikes?* just saying that is the max unit size.

in M2 TW, with edit the file, the hard coded max number is 250 + 3 officers + 253. in a battle of 2x2, you can see some real epic with around 8000 men per side. I hope ETW will at least allow the ability to mod for bigger units. otherwise it will be such a waste with a more powerful rig. with 60-80 men per unit to model a real regiment is just not enough.
It would be outstanding if CA would allow us to increase the size of the units. A good deal of you costumers has powerful rigs able to display large armies. Personally I would love to see huge units (500+), i don't know how much work it requires from CA to get so many but it would be appreciated very much.

500 seems rather excessive to me. I think the current 'company' level variation (~100-200 men per unit) is quite good. Larger than that, and units get unwieldy. And you cant easily change their facing in towns...and there's always that ONE soldier who refuses to do the loading animation and holds up the ENTIRE unit's firing sequence in the face of a charging horde of Aztec warriors...
"Sir, about the Aztecs..."
"No, Jose. We are going to wait for Fernando. Until he turns around, nobody moves."
"Sir, he's been standing there staring at his feet for thirty seconds!"
"DAMMIT SERGEANT, THIS IS A PROFESSIONAL ARMY. WE ARE GOING TO PERFORM OUR LOADING SEQUENCE IN THE CORRECT FASH-"
Followed by crunchy bubbling noises as Captain Gonzales briefly experiences the sensation of a bunch of sharp bits of obsidian strapped to a club passing through his brain.
Of course, that was MTW2...I'm sure CA will fix that error in the next game.

Tallyho lads, rape the houses and burn the women! Leave not a single potted plant alive! Full speed ahead and damn the cheesemongers!
The largest battle possible in RTW is roughly 38400. That is freakin huge. Although I don't think any computer can run that because of it being poorly coded for very large battles. ETW needs to be at least quad core optimised but I would love it if they made it optimised for 8 threads for Core i7.
I certainly would like to see 500+ units myself if CA can fix the path finding problem in a city fight. On the fields, I used 250 unit for M2TW and the AI performed ok. In the city, a 250 unit is a bit slow if they had to climb off the wall. but once they fight on the street, they seemed ok. the cavalry units, they are very clumsy in the city but I guess that what's they supposed to be.

I've just got my new PC last week,
Vista oltimate 64 bit
Intel® Core™ i7-965 Extreme 3.2GHZ 8MB Cache
RAID 0- 600GB (2 x 300GB)SATA 3.0Gb/s 10,000RPM 2 x 16Mb Cache
12GB DDR3 1600 MHZ OC PC3-12800
Dual 2GB GDDR5 ATI® Radeon® HD 4870 X2 in crossfire.
I did a test on M2TW, it was a 2x2 custom battle against AI, with my own modification of unit size (I made most of the units 253 men each just for this test), a total number of more then 16,000 men on the field! It got a bit slow after the fight started but still playable. That was a good fight, make you really feel is in the battle field. Unfortunately I don't know how to attach a picture here.
I just hope ETW can at least given us the option of using a bigger unit size for 250men+.
