I was wondering what the advantage of having alliances is? is it just to stop them attacking you? or is there some other reward from being in an alliance with other clans?

Allies are ninja food. So alliances simply help you prioretize your next ninja/geisha strike.

Lord Ted and Irving are right, a clan that you allied with will spend most of his time attacking his ennemies before attacking you (but keep your borders guarded).

The further away of your position on the map , the allied AI clan is from you , better the alliance. It will last longer, increasing your chances to get free provinces and soldiers if it gets killed off. It's even better if you see that they are already weak, loosing the war against an other AI clan.

Everyone is right! Alliances are best used for holding off an enemy for a few seasons.

The computer (in my opinion) ignores alliances ALMOST completely. In fact, this morning, Lord Mori asked me to cease fire and attacked me literally the next season.

However, I do try my best to ally with as many other clans as possible. I tend to get Shimazu's lands when he gets killed off by Imagawa.

None of the clans are trustworthy when it comes to keeping alliances. However, the AI seldom if ever goes to war against 2 clans at the same time.Ever notice how enemy Daimyo's at war with another clan are more than happy to ally with you.If you leave a border province lightly defended you will be attacked, alliance or no.It's kind of like the guy who will tell you your shoe's untied, and when you look down he sucker punches you in the nose. Always expect to be attacked and prepare as best you can,it will happen eventually.

that's what i find really annoying about the alliances. what is the point of keeping allies if you have to keep the provinces bordering your allies under constant guard? that's were a multi campaign would be cool.... but are human players any more trustworthy than the AI..hhmmm
