How competent is the AI?

I received MTW2 a year ago, but then sold it because I didnt have a dvd driver. Now I do have one and im thinking of buying another one.

Before I do though, I want to know if the AI has improved since RTW. Im playing RTW right now, even with the Europa Barborum mod it feels like im beating up a handicapped kid on the campaign (VH/H). Is MTW2 any better? Does it have armies and armies of crappy half-units? Has the diplomacy improved any? Has it got better in battle?

I dont expect the AI to be as good as a human player. I understand thats well into the future.

EDIT: If no, are there mods out their that can fix the majority of the problems?

EDIT 2: Nevermind. Decided to read a few pages back and got this thread https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=106719 . It seems like there are mods out there that have fixed most of the problems. I think im going to buy the game. Feel free to lock the thread.

Just install FactionHeir's Vanillamod. It's brilliant!

Thank you for your purchase. While vanilla MTW2 could use some work, there are plenty of mods out there that keep this game fun and challenging. While you are at it you should buy the gold edition of MTW2. Most mods will only work with the kingdoms expansion. Plus the few exta $ it costs is well worth it and made up for in the Americas campaign of the expansion.
