It does look as though units can be named. This makes sense if for no other reason than the units included in the Special Forces Edition. But will they be changeable?
It is a nice feature if it is, but not exactly sliced bread.

Education: that which reveals to the wise,
and conceals from the stupid,
the vast limits of their knowledge.

With the ability to name units and research technology and upgrades for existing units this is going to be the best game yet for roleplay!
Having a unit of elite line infantry that have been with you from the start, taken part in all your glorious charges and last ditch defenses, being able to upgrade them and give them better tech to keep them relevant, then giving them a fancy name to go with their tremendous experience and value... just fantastic.
The only thing that can make this better is if units can gather traits like generals. Having a paticularly vicious and elite unit gain traits that reflect how much the enemy fear their reputation would be nothing short of wonderful.

Traits for units would be interesting. The Coldstream Guards have a reputation for being a hard fighting enemy when lowers the morale of opponents and means their reinforcements are of a highly quality than a unit that is infamous for cowardise etc.
Push it to the point when a unit is so badly thought of, you have to disband it rather than try and retrain

I came to think of one thing. Apart from naming cities, units and factions, wouldn't it be interesting if you could also name your newly born family members? It could of course be abused, but it would also allow you get more attached to your empire. Maybe you would even start to care for them and not just have them killed off in case they have bad traits (or at least feel bad about it when you do this. (Then, you might also regret the name that you gave them and purposefully have them charge uphill into a mass of waiting bayonets (as you have always done.))) (Actually I'm not entirely sure if there are others around here who share my nasty tendency for general mistreatment (pun intended)).
...
I really like parentheses.
